Batmobile breaks down on The Grand Final Footy Show

The notorious AFL “batmobile”, which made headlines 29 years ago as a bizarre footy chariot for rocker Angry Anderson at the 1991 Grand Final, has made a surprise appearance on The Footy Show and predictably things didn’t go as planned.

The notorious AFL Grand Final ‘batmobile’ has made a return to the footy realm and predictably things did not go as planned with the unique piece of big game memorabilia.

The ‘batmobile’ famously ferried Angry Anderson and marathon runner Robert de Castella onto Waverley Park at the 1991 Grand Final. De Castella made a speech from the back of the car before Anderson gamely belted out his single Bound For Glory. It remains one of the

strangest moments of grand final pre-match entertainment ever.

Well, the car, which sold in September to a group of footy fans for $25,300, rolled back into the game as part of The Footy Show Grand Final Eve: My Room Telethon on Channel 9 on Friday.

It purred backstage waiting to drive Billy Brownless, dressed as Anderson, on to the set of the live show only to conk out as the segment started.

Frantic crew quickly pushed the vehicle and Brownless into centre stage, capturing the perils and charm of live TV in an instant.

The telethon raised just under $2 million for The My Room Charity at the Monash Children’s Hospital. In a nod to World of Sport the wood chop returned with world champion Laurence O’Toole splintering the efforts of Nathan Brown, Matthew Lloyd and Brownless with the axe.
