BRITISH pop sensation Ed Sheeran will play to a million Aussie fans after smashing tickets sales records for his latest tour.

Tour promoter Michael Gudinski unveiled a commemorative ice sculpture in Perth today to mark Sheeran’s million ticket-selling feat.

The previous record was 950,000 tickets sold by Dire Straits on their 1986 Brothers In Arms tour.

“We’ve had a warm-up show and I feel prepared,” Sheeran said. “We are all gearing up to get back into it.”

He said Australia and Ireland were his biggest markets, and it felt strange to sell so many tickets in places with relatively small populations.

“It feels weird to have one in 23 people come to a show,” he said. “That does feel a bit odd.

“But it’s best not to think about it. It’s best to take it one show at a time.”

Sheeran arrived in Western Australia on Wednesday, but avoided a trip to a Fremantle tattoo parlour where he has been inked on previous trips. He did, however, enjoy a spot of fishing today.

“I didn’t catch anything,” he said, before adding: “I’ve been behaving myself because I’ve got so many shows coming up. I’ll be having early nights. Well, for the first part.”

As for what audiences could expect at his shows, Sheeran, the world’s best-selling recording artist of 2017, said: “All people want is to be entertained.

“They don’t want to hear a song in the way you want to do it or a new song, they just want to be entertained with the songs that they know.

HOW MANY ALBUMS AND SINGLES DID SHEERAN SELL IN OZ LAST YEAR?

“It’s a very paint by numbers thing. The show differs every night but the songs people want to hear, they will hear.”

Sheeran will perform at Docklands Stadium on March 9, 10, 11 and 12. Melbourne is his biggest market in Australia.

Gudinski said: “To sell 250,000 tickets in Melbourne alone is phenomenal, let alone hitting one million ticket sales in Australia and New Zealand. It’s an absolute phenomenon.”

Sheeran will play 17 stadium shows on the tour.
