Contestant Sharon Johal says The Block has now become ‘the Danny Wallis show’

Disappointed Block contestant Sharon Johal had a scathing assessment of the series after a disaster auction results for the biggest season to date.

Sharon Johal says The Block needs to go back to basics after a disaster result for all but one couple after Saturday’s auctions.

Johal, who was disappointed with her experience on the show after a ‘villain edit’ with husband Ankur Dogra, said it’s become the Danny Wallis show after the IT entrepreneur and philanthropist bought three houses while two were passed in.

“It felt sad really, waking up in the house (on Sunday),’’ Johal said.

“I think a lot of people thought being the biggest Block, the tree change idea might have come a year too late.

“It’s just a shame it was a flop. You go into these things knowing that potentially this could be an outcome for so many of us, but no one could have imagined what happened and it’s a bad taste for everyone who’s worked so hard.

“This was definitely the hardest Block for everyone to put on and navigate.

“It was clear taking on the Block with the magnitude of this size was probably not going to be a successful auction. They need to take it back to basics.”

Ankur Dogra and Sharon Johal’s house passed in passed in at $4.075m.

Johal said she and Dogra didn’t shed any tears knowing they are still in with a chance of making a profit with a private sale.

“We’re still selling it and there were people who were willing to bid up to $5mil for our house,’’ she said.

“We were confident with our auctioneer and we’d get that, but we can’t explain what happened in that moment.

“The Block is really the Danny Wallis show, if there was no Danny Wallis, none of those houses would have sold. The first one was between two guys who were bidding against each other and it was ego.

“Strategically passing it in was the best thing we could do otherwise we would have been in the same position as Tom and Sarah-Jane and walking away with virtually nothing.”

Omar and Oz won with a profit of more than $1.6mil — Johal saying she hoped all pairs would walk away happy.

“We didn’t do it for the big pay off,’’ she said.

“More money would have been amazing but the whole experience has been super challenging for Anks and I and this has been the cherry on top.”
