Time On is your wrap-up of all the footy media gossip and banter.

Eddie McGuire has reflected on a “confronting” period in The Footy Show’s history, saying he felt for sacked host Craig Hutchison.

McGuire has watched some of a two-part documentary on the TV juggernaut, produced by Jam TV for the show’s 30th anniversary.

It was in July 2017 that Hutchison was axed in favour of original host McGuire.

“It was interesting looking at that particular period,’’ McGuire said while filling in for Hutchison on his The Sounding Board podcast.

“The first show is about the years that I hosted it, with Sam (Newman) and Trev (Marmalade) and Ian Johnson and how it started and how it just took off. And then the changeover when Garry (Lyon) and James Brayshaw came in and then Rebecca Maddern, and then Hutchy.

“It was actually quite confronting to see the last part of it to be perfectly honest. I felt a bit for Hutchy. I wasn’t really following The Footy Show ... I was spending a bit more time overseas, working and doing breakfast radio.

“It brought back a lot of memories and a lot of things I had forgotten about.”

During that last show with Hutchison at the helm, Sam Newman had staged his famous silent protest where he refused to speak to Hutchison or anyone else during the two-hour show after producers refused to let him do a particular skit.

“That last show where Sam refused to speak, it was quite staggering,’’ McGuire said.

“It was also interesting to see the evolution of Sam through the years. When it started we were so excited and then at the end Sam had got to a stage where Sam had thought he was being censored out of existence, and political correctness had taken over. It’s a fascinating social document, going a bit deeper. It’s not just Trev cracking a gag or Roland Rocchiccioli crashing through the set on the House of Bulger — all that’s in it, so it’s fun.

“When I watched it yesterday I really watched the evolution, if you like, of a look behind the curtain and what goes on.”

The documentary is believed to be airing on Nine after the Olympics.

McClure won’t stand for Cornes’ ‘disrespectful’ words

Footy commentator Kane Cornes and host Sam McClure have clashed over criticism of Collingwood captain Darcy Moore.

Cornes called out Moore after the Magpies’ loss to the Gold Coast on Saturday, saying he needs to play with more urgency and plays one good game in every six.

McClure, filling in as host on Footy Classified, said Cornes went too far and labelled the comments as disrespectful.

“I’m not sure Darcy Moore is the player that his reputation says that he is at the moment,’’ Cornes said earlier on SEN.

“Play with more urgency, put your hand up to play on the best opposition forward. Darcy Moore should be playing on (Suns forward) Ben King, his timing is wrong, he tries to be something that is a little bit too cute. He plays one good game in every six.”

McClure said: “I think it’s incredibly disrespectful.... I think he’s out of form. You compared him to Jacob Weitering, he’s nothing like him. I think your language sometimes around these guys....”

Cornes didn’t back down.

“I don’t just say things for the sake of it. His timing is off, he’s missing spoils, he comes off his man at the wrong time, gets a lot of goals kicked on him, he doesn’t impact offensively, he doesn’t intercept marks like other defenders do. One good game in every six may have actually been generous.”

McClure shook his head and said: “Extraordinary.”

Carey reveals why he shunned Hall of Fame ‘circus’

Wayne Carey has returned to the social media world with a new podcast, speaking for the first time since his absence from the NSW Hall of Fame at the start of May.

The controversial footy legend admitted he received a call from AFL boss Andrew Dillon about his elevation to legend status in the same week that the industry was taking a stand against gender-based violence.

Carey said he decided not to attend to avoid a “circus”.

“I got a phone call from a young man at AFL NSW and he said would you accept a call from (AFL CEO) Andrew Dillon,’’ Carey said on his new platform called Uncensored with Wayne Carey, alongside Tony Sheahan.

“I was at the airport about to fly up to Sydney and said of course I’ll accept the phone call. It was very brief to be honest, in the end it was still go along and he said basically the conversation was … there wasn’t a discussion in and around me being inducted as a legend. That I would still be inducted into the Hall of Fame. He said that hadn’t crossed their desk which I find hard to believe to be honest, but it’s neither here nor there.

“He mentioned still go along, (but) I don’t want to detract from the rest of the players that were being inducted whether it be legend or just into the Hall of Fame. It would have become a circus. And the focus would have been around me unfortunately for them so I made the decision not to go. I felt that was the right one for everyone at that function.”

Carey said he was disappointed to miss out on the honour.

“From what I hear everyone had a great night and I move on,’’ he said.

“I’ve lost no sleep over it. It sat with me for a little while, was there a little disappointment, I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t. I sit very comfortable with not attending the night and only heard great things. Some of my heroes from when I was eight, nine, 10 years old got inducted that night. From a selfish point of view I would have liked to see those guys enjoy the night. The focus was on those people not me.”

He added: “No I wasn’t blocked from attending. That was my choice. I still flew up to Sydney by the way.”

Carey said he didn’t attend the Australian Football Hall of Fame night last month but watched it. He was inducted in 2010.

“For me not to attend wasn’t out of the ordinary. It’s generally not one of my preferred nights to be out (on a Tuesday). It’s a great night. I do sit down and watch it. Sarah Jones did a great job (hosting) and I enjoyed watching it.”

Why Brayshaw was banned from Uber

James Brayshaw has opened up on why he was banned from Uber for six years.

The Channel 7 and Triple M commentator revealed the unusual situation when quizzed about taking car ride services.

“What happened was I had a credit card that kept getting cancelled because they kept fraud alerts,’’ he said on Triple M’s Saturday Rub.

“And then I booked an Uber while it was cancelled under fraud alert without realising and so they barred me. Six years barred from Uber.”

Brayshaw’s colleague Isaac Smith quipped: “You get less for murder.”

Meanwhile Brayshaw’s partner in crime Billy Brownless is set to undergo hernia surgery this week. Brownless later interrupted live radio while cheering on his horse running at Caulfield.

Nathan Brown’s on air blunder

Nathan Brown is quick to pounce on a gaffe and he’s produced a classic.

On Triple M’s Sunday Rub while interviewing Richmond’s Nathan Broad, he asked “where are you placed and how long til we see you back?

A bemused Broad replied: “Back where?”

Brown said: “Back playing football, I apologise.”

Broad said: “Nah, I’m out there today … Geez my form must be going pretty good.”

The box erupted with laughter with Brown explaining “it’s been a busy week Broady”.

Dale Thomas asked how many games Broad had missed and he replied just one at the start of the year.

Broad actually thought he was being stitched up with a joke.

Of that crew Steve Johnson famously asked the worst question last year when he quizzed Magpies’ assistant coach Scott Selwood about Carlton’s Harry McKay. Here’s a new contender.

Roaming Brian takes a seat

Brisbane’s thrilling win inadvertently caused popular post-match segment Roaming Brian to be rested on Friday night.

Brian Taylor has scoped out the victorious Lions rooms on a few occasions already this season so it was fair to give it a break at the Gabba.

Taylor actually threw to co-commentator James Brayshaw who was set up for player chats at the desk.

Taylor has offered up some humorous moments so far this year, namely outing Essendon star Sam Durham and his new model girlfriend Paris Bishop.

Rising Cats star

Geelong’s Ollie Dempsey is fast becoming a star of the game.

The blonde long haired goalkicker said he’s moved out of the home he had shared with lookalike teammate Sam De Koning.

“I got sick of cutting his hair so I’m done with him,’’ Dempsey said.

“I’ve moved out and I’m living solo.”

Dempsey was awarded Channel 7’s best on ground and won his second television this season.

Milestone match mistake

It was a milestone match for Collingwood defender Isaac Quaynor but his 100th didn’t get off to the ideal start.

The club’s cheer squad spelt his name wrong on the banner, going with ISSAC.

Perhaps he didn’t realise the mistake, but it wasn’t a good sign with the Pies going on to lose the game against the Gold Coast Suns.
