Why Wayne Carey found a TV show more nerve-racking than playing in a Grand Final

Dual premiership captain Wayne Carey says stripping naked on national television triggered more nerves than playing in a AFL Grand Final.

With nicknames The Duck and The King, Carey, who led North Melbourne through two Grand Finals, is baring all to raise awareness of men’s health issues, particularly prostate cancer, on Channel 7’s All New Monty.

“It was uncomfortable and embarrassing, but there was a sense of achievement once it was over,’’ Carey said about disrobing on stage.

However, celebrities who worked alongside Carey said he worked very hard to get his routine right.

TV tradie Adam Dovile, who also appears on the show, told Confidential: “You will not meet a bloke that is more punctual than The Duck. Wherever we had to be, the bloke would have been there 15 minutes before anyone. He’s the absolute nicest bloke, too. He’s got time for everyone, loves a chat, loves a laugh, and loves a beer.

“I don’t even (barrack) for North Melbourne. I’m a Collingwood legends member for crying out loud, but The Duck was an absolute champion.”

The show’s host Shane Jacobson told Confidential: “The fear getting his clothes off in front of a crowd, you could see in (Carey’s) eyes; he was startled by it.

“Having said that, there’s a reason he was so good at football, and he applied himself (preparing for the show) so he didn’t want to let the team down. He wold turn up early and really bring his A-game. He was really interested in getting it right.”

Dovile says: “Before we started, on got on stage, The Duck said, ‘Mate, I’m more toey than before playing a Grand Final. I thought, ‘If The King is saying that, I should bloody nervous, too!’”

The All New Monty premieres on Sunday.
