Pop superstar Harry Styles could have picked any act in the world to play the support slot on his tour.
He chose British rock duo Wet Leg, with runaway hits Chaise Longue and Wet Dream, and who won two Grammy and two Brit awards earlier this month.
“When it was proposed, us opening for Harry Styles, we were like, ‘Really?’” lead guitarist Hester Chambers told the Herald Sun. “We thought it was a joke.”
Singer Rhian Teasdale added: “We’re a rock band and they’re like a massive pop production. It’s really incredible that Harry chose a band like us ... from contrasting genres, like a different world.
“Obviously, I would say it’s really cool that he’s taken us on tour,” Teasdale said, laughing. “But I didn’t think we were the obvious choice.”
The duo say Styles is the a gracious and generous host. “He’s super nice, softly spoken, chill, and normal,” Teasdale said. “We’re so lucky. All of our crew are really happy because all of his crew are really nice and welcoming. It’s good vibes everywhere.”
Chambers and Teasdale formed Wet Leg three years ago. They’re still processing the sudden leap to global fame, their awards haul and performing in stadiums.
“I don’t want this to come across in a bad way, but I feel like we were cheated out of playing the sticky carpet places and little grotto gigs,” Chambers says.
Chambers also reveals she didn’t sleep on Wednesday night after going down a wormhole of online hate over their 2023 Grammy and Brit Award wins.
“I went to some weird places on the internet,” she said.
“I learned a lot of people are very angry about us winning Brit and Grammys, and how much we don’t deserve it. All the long messages and arguments. They are so bothered by it.
“I could be really worried about it, and sometimes I am. Sometimes it can add to my depression. But the beauty of any art is, it’s subjective, and you don’t need to like it.
“We don’t like some music (by other artists). But we don’t put our time and energy into telling everyone why. That’s seems like such a boring, negative way to behave.”
That said, they were thrilled by the awards wins.
“I’m not a very competitive person, so ranking artistic endeavours doesn’t really compute in my brain,” Chambers said. “It was fun to be a fly on the wall in room filled with musical artistes.”
Teasdale: “It was a nice time because everything has been moving at a million miles an hour. It was a nice opportunity to take stock. Plus, it makes you look really good in front of your friends and family. For them, it’s like, ‘Oh, a Grammy. That sounds legit.”
The duo are planning to write new songs after touring.
“We’re thinking about thinking creatively,” Teasdale said. “We did have a little go the other week, and pulled an oldie out of the bag.”
Harry Styles and Wet Leg perform at Marvel Stadium on Friday and Saturday.
