Wayne Carey says he was poolside when her fired off controversial tweet

Wayne Carey says he was relaxing with a few poolside cocktails when his two-word tweet sparked a mini social-media storm.

Wayne Carey says he’d had a few poolside cocktails in Singapore when he sparked a footy social media controversy on his infamous affair with Kelli Stevens.

Carey responded with “three times” on X, formerly Twitter, to a cheeky user asking why he left North Melbourne back in 2002.

The user asked Carey: “How come you traded clubs?”

Another user chimed in: “He slept with his teammates wife!”

To which Carey replied: “3 times.”

“Let’s be honest, we all know what occurred,” Carey said on his The Truth Hurts podcast.

“I’ve never said I had mental health issues to hide behind anything to stay out of the paper.

“People are saying why should he say that? I don’t bring these things up, am I not allowed to respond to it? I don’t work in media anymore, if I want to say 150 times or three times, don’t I have that right?”

Carey had a simple message for those who keep bringing it up, saying there are more important issues in the world.

“Get over it. Twenty years ago,” he said.

“I’ve learnt to live with it, I haven’t forgiven myself for it but I’ve learnt to live with it. So all you wankers out there, learn to live with it.

“And if I say 150 times or three times, who gives a shit, seriously. Biggest beat up. It’s not funny but it is more than 20 years ago.”

Carey said he was on his phone in Singapore by the pool and admitted he’d had a few cocktails.

“I’ve always said there should be an app on your phone that you have to breathe into like a breathalyser,” he said.

“I was completely sane, might have had a couple of cocktails by the pool, but nothing untoward. I was having a lot of fun.

“I’m not worried about banter I have on Twitter at all, it’s what it creates.

“At end of the day I’ve had my fair share of media so some nitwit that has a go at me on social media ... it is water off a duck’s back.”

After the incident blew up Carey took to X again to call for perspective and said his boast was him being “facetious”.
