Wayne Carey and Jack Ginnivan exchange texts over kick drama

Jack Ginnivan drew the ire of footy legend Wayne Carey for a kick around the corner, but a text from ‘The King’ settled the score.

Wayne Carey says he is now mates with Collingwood star Jack Ginnivan after the pair exchanged texts.

Carey was commentating on Channel 7 when goalsneak Ginnivan attempted a kick around his body while directly in front and missed.

It drew the ire of footy legend Carey with host Hamish McLachlan after the win over the Suns taking down the Magpie’s number and declaring Carey would text him.

“I’d love a text from Wayne Carey,’’ Ginnivan said.

It took a few days but Carey revealed on Wednesday that he had followed through.

Ginnivan’s cheeky response.

“(Commentating) I said Jack don’t ever do that. If you’re directly in front that’s a drop punt,’’ he said.

“Hamish has told Jack that I’m going to give him a text. I didn't get that til a couple days later.

“(I wrote) Dear Jack, this is Duck/King or Wayne Carey. I’ve got a bit of a bug bear with you kicking the ball around the corner when you’re directly in front. Unless it’s from a certain distance out I’d appreciate that you just go back and kick a drop punt. I love your work.”

Carey said the response was positive.

“He said, ‘I’ve been waiting for the text, it’s been a few days’,’’ he said on Triple M.

“He says he’s going to now do drop punts only from 45m out and he appreciates the support.

“I love the way he goes about his work, but players that are doing this round the corner (kick) … he should have ended up with four or five (goals).”

Carey said it was odd that McLachlan intervened, but there was a good outcome.

“Now Jack and I are mates and I’ll be sending him some messages.”
