Time On is your Monday wrap-up of all the footy gossip and banter from the weekend.
Tony Jones mentioned a few weeks ago that he had just found out he’s second cousins with an AFL superstar.
Turns out it’s Geelong triple premiership hero Jimmy Bartel. It was Bartel’s mum who uncovered the previously unknown connection.
Jones was chuffed by the discovery when he first revealed it on the Sunday Footy Show, but he didn’t say the name of the player.
We have yet to hear how 305-game star Bartel feels about his relative but the pair are stablemates at Channel 9 so it could be a new-found love-in.
Judging from Jones’ handball effort, though, Bartel’s football prowess doesn’t run in the family. It’s more the media skills they have most in common.
Three votes: Taranto
Everyone has been coming for Kane Cornes and even his father has a contrary view.
Cornes has been critical of Tim Taranto’s ball use but tweeted that he gave the Tigers midfielder three votes on Sunday.
Graham wasn’t happy he had overlooked Port Adelaide’s brick wall defender Aliir Aliir.
“Surely Aliir Aliir. Defenders get no love. Without him, they lose,’’ Graham responded after midnight on Monday.
Kane had praised Taranto’s effort — “that was some game by him!”.
One follower asked Graham how he was still awake to which he responded “Night owl”.
Suns stars pre-game grass habit
Matt Rowell has come clean on why he eats grass on the ground before a game.
The Gold Coast Suns midfielder says it’s become a ritual.
“Just started doing it at the start of this year in the practice matches and leading into the normal games,’’ he said.
“Just kind of feeling my surroundings, so I’ll close my eyes a bit, listen, taste some grass, feel it, just a ritual I’ve been doing to get my head in the zone a bit. Just one with the ground and makes you feel good.”
Channel 7 commentator Hamish McLachlan made a good point: “You’re just hoping it’s all organic pesticides?”
Rowell smiled: “I haven’t dropped off the perch yet.”
‘I got him’: Brayshaw’s brotherly gibe
Andrew Brayshaw got one up on his brother Angus after Fremantle’s upset win over Melbourne on Saturday.
The pair had a few exchanges during the game with Andrew saying it was all a bit of fun.
“He got me a few times and I got him, it’s all love,’’ the Freo star said post-game on Seven.
He also made a helmet gesture to Angus which he explained was to mean he should strap himself in. It sure was a rollercoaster day for the Demons.
Brown v Brayshaw
The Tom Bellchambers and Cam Mooney boxing match has sparked much chatter within the footy industry.
Triple M’s Friday Huddle crew had a bit of fun when host Mark Howard asked each member who they’d want to fight.
Nathan Brown didn’t hesitate. “James Brayshaw,’’ he said. “I box with him most Tuesdays. Absolutely (I’d win), with one hand behind my back.”
Luke Darcy said his former ruck foe Matty Primus. “I had a great rivalry with Matty Primus. The big mattress. And I suspect it mightn’t end well for me.”
Howard said Anthony Hudson while Damian Barrett said Tony Jones who wasn’t too impressed when they discussed the matter on the Sunday Footy Show. Barrett said he was joking while Brown also backtracked pretty quickly — “Brayshaw’s a bit better than what I said”.
