Tiger Hutchence-Geldof living in a ‘squat’ while waiting for her inheritance from Michael Hutchence’s estate

The daughter of former INXS rocker Michael Hutchence says she’s never received money from her father’s estate, with the director of a new documentary on Hutchence claiming her London apartment was like a ‘squat’.

Michael Hutchence’s daughter Tiger is still waiting for money from her rock star father’s inheritance.

The 22-year-old, now known as Tiger Hutchence-Geldof, was due to receive a share of the INXS star’s fortune when she turned 21.

However filmmaker Richard Lowenstein, who directed the new Hutchence documentary Mystify, said Hutchence-Geldof’s London flat resembles a “squat”.

She was raised by Sir Bob Geldof after the death of father Hutchence and mother Paula Yates and was recently linked to Australian musician Nicholas Allbrook of band Pond.

“I met up with Tiger for dinner in London and everything she did and said reminded me of Michael,” Lowenstein said.

“We went to her flat to watch the documentary and it was like a little squat. I said ‘Where’s the money from your dad’s estate?’ and she said ‘I’ve never received anything from anyone. I had a meeting once with an accountant that was so bad I didn’t want to do it again’.”

The director said Hutchence-Geldof was “furious” at the Channel 7 2017 documentary The Last Rockstar using private photos of her as a baby which she felt should be hers — the INXS’ frontman’s estate has been surrounded in financial disarray since his death in 1997.

Lawyer Colin Diamond, who was featured heavily in The Last Rockstar and displayed many of Hutchence’s private possessions for the cameras, was caught up in the Paradise Papers offshore tax haven scam, revealed two years ago.

The Last Rockstar wasn’t for me and I don’t think Tiger enjoyed it very much,” Lowenstein said.

“I think if Michael had been alive he would have been in absolute horror, and every friend of his I’ve spoken to agrees, if he’d seen the situation his daughter is in (financially) and seeing what’s happened to his estate he would be in abject horror. To see a documentary where that guy (Diamond) was taking pride of place was an absolute insult to Michael’s memory or the real story.”

Lowenstein said he hoped money from Hutchence’s music will start to flow to his heir.

“She is his legal heir, we’ve had lawyers look at it, I’m sure the money will be sorted out.”

Lowenstein, who met Hutchence in 1984 when he made INXS’ Burn For You video, went to London last October to get Hutchence-Geldof’s approval on Mystify — which opens on July 4.

He was concerned about revelations in the film, including a secret girlfriend Hutchence had while dating Tiger’s mother Paula Yates.

“I think Tiger was quite nervous about what was in the film, especially in relation to her mum. I know INXS were nervous too, but you can’t give them or the management final cut because there’s a lot of investors worried it’d become a puff piece,” Lowenstein said.

Hutchence-Geldof, who remains very private and shuns media, was thrilled when Lowenstein gave her a guitar and jumper belonging to her father, which he found while researching the film.

Lowenstein had hit a corporate roadblock with no permission to use any music or video other than songs by Hutchence’s side-project Max Q in the documentary

The director, who said the film is his “apology” to Hutchence for not being more present during the end of his life, was resigned to the film not featuring any INXS songs.

“Tiger was very emotionally brave to watch the documentary, she was obviously very young when her parents died, but she was saying ‘I never knew any of this about my dad’. I was worried about her seeing Michael had a mistress and she said ‘Oh with all that carry on, of course he would have had a mistress’.

“She was very grown up about it. She said she’d been cut out of everything (to do with her father’s music) but wanted to do anything she could do to help.”

Hutchence-Geldof emailed INXS’ record label, the band members and management.

“Her email said ‘I’ve seen the film, I’m totally happy with it, the film treats my mother in a very fair way. Please let Richard have my dad’s music, not just the Max Q music but the INXS music’.

“Within 24 hours I got an email saying ‘How many songs do you want?’ We’d had very definite rejections from both record company and management. Half way through making the movie we’d offered them lots of money, because it affected the film, we got an extra investor just to get the songs.

“I was a nervous wreck, people wanted to see him on stage playing INXS songs, and it was a flat rejection, they wouldn’t even watch the film.

“Then Tiger sends an email and in 24 hours — bang. It made me think they may be very scared of her! So she gets a very special thank you at the end of the movie.”
