MICHAEL Hutchence’s brother has claimed the INXS star was dating three different women in the last few months of his life.
Rhett Hutchence also stated Hutchence had “no intention” of marrying Paula Yates, mother of his daughter Tiger Lily.
“Michael was actively involved with three girls right up until he left LA,” Rhett Hutchence revealed.
His brother was based in LA in 1997 working on a solo album before flying to Australia in November for an INXS tour.
Hutchence died in a Sydney hotel on November 22.
“From our conversations he never mentioned a desire to marry Paula,” Rhett said. “Quite the opposite — he went to our mother and stepfather’s room the day they left Los Angeles in mid August 1997 and in the course of the conversation told them not to believe any newspaper stories of a wedding, that he had no intention of marrying Paula Yates.”
WAR OF WORDS: INXS slam Seven’s doco
Rhett Hutchence was involved in the Four Corners expose on his brother’s lawyer Colin Diamond, who has controlled the Michael Hutchence estate and linked to the Paradise Papers investigation of financial misconduct.
Hutchence said Diamond had created a will for Paula Yates the month after his brother’s passing.
“Paula’s will written by Colin with him as the executor is dated exactly a month after Michael passed, maybe not the most ‘of sound body and mind’ time,” Hutchence told News Corp.
Rhett Hutchence also said his brother had spoken to a major TV host in Australia about Paula Yates getting a “presenting job” on Australian TV — her background was as a British TV host.
She infamously interviewed Hutchence in on UK TV show The Big Breakfast in 1994.
The next year she left husband Bob Geldof, with Tiger Lily born on July 22, 1996.
”Michael wanted to set her up with some stability and talked about a presenting host job for Paula,” Rhett said. “Then it would be easier to make the break.”
Yates died of a heroin overdose in September 2000, with their daughter Tiger Lily being raised with her half-sisters and guardian Bob Geldof.
Hutchence slammed Channel 7’s documentary The Last Rockstar — which aired to low ratings over two nights last month (526,000 and 488,000) — calling it “sickening and painful to watch.”
Ironically the Four Corners special out-rated it last night on 770,000 viewers.
The Channel 7 show featured a rare interview with Diamond, who showcased many of the personal items from Hutchence’s estate which he took possession of days after the singer’s death.
Rhett Hutchence said the items, including a diary, had never been seen by his family or given to daughter Tiger Lily.
“Michael would never have wanted anyone to act for him, if it meant causing our family grief to the extent Colin has,” Hutchence said.
The Four Corners expose found Diamond had set up a company in 2015 to exploit the commercial possibilities of unreleased Hutchence solo material to coincide with the 20th anniversary of his death this month.
The Last Rockstar featured Spotify links to stream some of the unheard tracks however, an album originally planned for release to coincide with the TV show has been pushed to next year.
Diamond and Hutchence set up a company called Chardonnay in 1992. Diamond is now in charge of Hutchence’s lucrative “intellectual property rights”.
Rhett Hutchence hoped the Four Corners program will shine a light on Diamond’s behaviour.
“What a perfect time for the Paradise Papers to be unveiled on Michael’s 20th anniversary,” he said.
“I believe armed with the ammunition we have now and knowing the intentions of Colin Diamond if we all stand together as one, something that he made sure we didn’t do from the get-go, we can apply to have Colin Diamond taken away from any dealings regarding the Hutchence estate and held responsible for his previous actions. 20 years is way too long to have the wrong man at the helm.”
Hutchence and Yates’ daughter Tiger-Lily was due to inherit his fortune on her 21st birthday this year, however much has been eaten up in legal fees although INXS’ continued success should see her receive a steady stream of songwriting royalties.
This month the band were presented with an award recognising global album sales of 50 million records — Hutchence co-wrote the bulk of the band’s songs.
The members of INXS declined to comment on the revelations in the Four Corners program.
The band appeared on 60 Minutes on Sunday to promote a 30th anniversary reissue of INXS’s iconic album Kick, which was released last Friday.
Richard Lowenstein, who directed many of INXS’ music videos as well as Hutchence’s film debut Dogs in Space, is working on a film on Hutchence’s life, due for release next year.
