Sooshi Mango troupe to open a real Italian restaurant on Lygon St

Famed Aussie comedy trio Sooshi Mango are about to bring the “spark” back to a popular Melbourne dining precinct as they prepare to unveil their authentic Italian flagship eatery.

Inspired by their ethnic alter egos comedy stars Sooshi Mango are hoping to breathe new life into Lygon St by opening an Italian restaurant.

The popular trio, Joe Salanitri, Carlo Salanitri, and Andrew Manfre, have named the venue Johnny, Vince and Sam’s, after their relatable Dad characters.

“We’ve discussed it for a while and we thought wouldn’t it be great to bring the spark back and the eyeballs back to Lygon St,’’ Manfre said.

“We’re not saying we’re the saviours but something popped up there and it’s so rich in heritage. The characters have become our second identity and we’re excited to bring this to life.”

The trio have created a menu with business partner Johnny Di Francesco of 400 Gradi fame and have used the same design team behind city restaurants Society and Grill Americano. But the boys won’t be working in the kitchen when doors open to the public on June 28.

“There’d be a lot of burnt pasta and pizza if we did that, we’ll leave the cooking to those who can but we’ve spent a bit of time developing the menu,’’ Carlo said.

“We’ve worked tirelessly on the decor to give it the right feel. We really want it to stand on its own two feet and we want people to have a good experience.”

Joe added: “It’s fun and represents our comedy brand but it’s also authentic and we want this to be the first of many restaurants with Lygon St as our flagship.”

Sooshi Mango, who have two shows at the Palais Theatre on June 18, plan to go global with a TV show and movie in the pipeline following sellout stadium shows.
