SmoothFM breakfast presenters tell how they top radio ratings

SmoothFM breakfast radio presenters Glenn Daniels and Bogart Torelli reveal the one reason their station has stayed atop the ratings — and they’re quite happy to stay in their own lane.

Staying out of the radio claptrap is the reason SmoothFM has stayed atop the ratings, says breakfast presenters Glenn Daniels and Bogart Torelli.

While their competition seem to end up in the headlines — either intentionally with over the top gimmicks and shock jockeying or accidentally with messy contract battles — the More Music Breakfast Show with Bogart and Glenn duo are quite happy staying in their own lane.

“We just don’t get involved with what’s going on at the other stations and again, I think that’s been one of the reasons for our success,” Daniels told Confidential.

“We’ve always focused on Smooth and not got into the game of commenting on what the other radio stations are doing.

“There are some stations who love to fire across the bow at the others but we’ve never got involved in that but we just focus on what we do.”

Smooth is celebrating its seventh birthday on Tuesday and despite its relative youth, is the No. 1 station on air thanks to high rating shows throughout the week — helped along by well-known names such as Richard Wilkins, Cameron Daddo, Melissa Doyle and David Campbell.

Bogart and Torelli, both in the industry for more than three decades each, have themselves been in the breakfast slot for more than six years.

They said Smooth and their Nova parent company was the best they’ve ever worked for in terms of looking after their people — a stark contrast between 2GB two floors down who have this year received multiple complaints of shock jock Ray Hadley’s term long bullying.

Torelli said she had never experienced serious bullying, but in those instances management should be more responsive.

“You can be a victim and have done absolutely nothing wrong and that’s uncalled for and I blame people at the top for that,” Torelli said.

“They shouldn’t let it continue.

“There have been people who haven’t been particularly nice over the years but I’ve been very lucky I’ve been surrounded by wonderful people.

“Here, we’re very fortunate.”
