Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong launched a scathing attack on US President Donald Trump and Tesla tycoon Elon Musk at the band’s Melbourne show on Saturday night.
“Don’t you want these f---ing politicians to shut the f--k up?” Armstrong asked the crowd at Marvel Stadium during a segment of the concert focused on their politically-charged album, American Idiot.
“Don’t you want Elon Musk to shut the f--k up? Don’t you want Donald Trump to shut the f--k up?
“I’m not gonna get angry. F--k that shit,” Armstrong added.
“We don’t need to see what’s on Twitter. This is about us; everybody together.
“We’re gonna dance together, we’re gonna sing together, we’re gonna love each other, we’re gonna scream together. Tonight, ladies and gentlemen, is a celebration.”
The explicit rant was met with cheers from the 60,000-strong crowd.
Musk has a role as “special government employee,” and an office at the White House with the Trump administration.
The band’s Saviors Tour is a spirited rewind of their classic albums Dookie (1994) and American Idiot (2004), which combined, feature hits including Longview, Basket Case, When I Come Around, Holiday, Boulevard Of Broken Dreams, and Wake Me Up When September Ends.
Armstrong has said the American Idiot album, inspired by the Iraq War, and re-election of US President George W Bush, changed his life.
He told Billboard last year: “When you … make a big statement, musically, and it gets acknowledged, it’s the best feeling ever,” Armstrong said.
