Sam Newman has revealed details of his approach to go on jungle reality series I’m a Celebrity … Get me out of Here!

The former The Footy Show co-host, 75, had initial discussions two years ago but Network 10 decided not to proceed.

“I was approached (but) they didn’t go on with it,” Newman said.

“They asked would I be interested in it? And I said that all depends.

“What they wanted me to do, when it was and what would the remuneration be.

“Then they asked me a series of questions about do I like being in the outdoors, I said not really, they said do you like spiders, I said not really, they said do you like snakes, I said not really, they said do you like bush tucker, I said not really, they said are you interested in camping out a lot and meeting people you don’t know, I said not really.

“They said you sound perfect for the show. I said good on you. It never got down to discussing finance or anything like that.

“The person acting on my behalf … they said thank you for being part of the process but we’ve decided not to go on with that. So I was asked.”

Newman, at times a controversial TV personality and podcaster on You Cannot be Serious, said it never got to the point of money being discussed. He wasn’t the only polarising figure approached by the show, with former My Kitchen Rules judge Pete Evans dumped from the line-up last year following another controversy.

Newman said he’s tried to get Evans as a guest on his podcast.

“We’ve texted a few times and he didn’t say no but it never got anywhere,’’ Newman said.

“He said he’d be happy to come on.”

This year’s I’m a Celeb show is rumoured to include former Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley, Amazing Race host Beau Ryan and MasterChef favourite Poh Ling Yeow.

Hosted by Julia Morris and Dr Chris Brown the show filmed in remote New South Wales will air in January.
