Rex Hunt has officially signed off from radio.

The legendary footy commentator and fishing guru parted ways with 3AW earlier this month and, after taking leave, has said it’s time to move on.

“This is the last time I will mention my radio station 3AW here in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia,’’ Hunt, 72, wrote on Facebook on Friday.

“The reason is simple … you have your time, let the new breed come in and you move on.”

Hunt was hosting Footy Nightline when a late night outburst on his footy program led to him taking leave of his duties to focus on family.

He first worked at 3AW in 1979 along with fellow legendary broadcaster Harry Beitzel.

In a lengthy post detailing his illustrious career and his colleagues, Hunt wrote about his 21 years as head caller.

“My favourite nicknames were Yaaaaaableeet, Gary Ablett senior, The cranium, Mil Hanna and The chrome Motorbike, Tom Harley.

“My favourite players to call were Gary Ablett senior, Wayne Carey and Matthew Lyooooooyd.”

Hunt’s 3AW Fishing Show was on air for 15 years.

“To everyone at 3AW I say thank you.

“It’s my time to retire from radio. I am a shot duck … times have passed me by.

“To our listeners, the very soul of the station, I say thanks for one hell of a ride. It’s time for me to go.”

Hunt played 202 VFL matches between 1968 and 1978 with Richmond, Geelong and St Kilda, a career that included two VFL premierships with Richmond in 1969 and 1973. He was also a policeman at age 30.
