Carlton is on the march, and so were dozens of Londoners on Monday – straight past international pop star Robbie Williams in his Blues jersey, that is.
The Take That singer took to the streets of the UK capital in his AFL team’s paraphernalia to test if he would get recognised, while accomplice and wife Ayda Field Williams filmed the encounters.
Miffed that he hadn’t been noticed in Hyde Park in an all-pink ensemble and diamante glasses the day before, Williams said he hoped his name emblazoned on the back of his Carlton jumper might get him some attention.
A video shared to social media showed Williams sitting on a bench, one leg crossed over the other, occasionally tapping his foot as he patiently waited for someone to spot him.
But scores of people walked past, oblivious to the global sensation sitting mere feet away.
He then starts walking, and after one woman recognises him he is swarmed by people wanting to take photos.
“Back in the game,” he exclaims to the camera.
“Jackpot.”
The 50-year-old danced down the street in celebration.
Williams was named Carlton global ambassador last year, a role which he said he would take “very seriously”.
He has been true to his word, posting support for the Blues to his 3m followers on Instagram, and even penning new lyrics to songs to celebrate their victories.
Excitement over the long-suffering team hit fever-pitch in last year’s finals series – the first time Carlton had played in a preliminary final since 2000.
The Blues now sit second on the ladder and have won four games in a row.
They are favoured to win at the MCG on Sunday afternoon when they take on rivals, Richmond.
