Comedian Joel Creasey says his first radio gig couldn’t have come at a better time.
After a surprise phone call a few months ago, the TV host and stand-up comic didn’t take long to agree to join Nova’s top rating drive show alongside Kate Ritchie and Tim Blackwell.
“It wasn’t something immediately on my radar and 2020 has been such a bizarre year and I’m not going to be travelling like I used to for work, so this is a dream job,’’ Creasey told the Herald Sun.
“I was approached a while ago and it was one of those phone calls I wasn’t expecting.
“I’m nervous because I’m such a fan of the show and I want to do it justice.”
Creasey is replacing fellow comedian Marty Sheargold and will begin on September 14 in the 3-6pm national timeslot.
“I’ve been having to hold onto the secret for quite a while and I’m not great at that,’’ Creasey said.
“I’ve been insinuating to friends that I’m on The Masked Singer. The Wizard clues sounded like me and then the Wizard sang and people were like, well that’s not Joel.
“I genuinely do love making people laugh and I’ve loved being a guest on the show.
“I adore Marty and we’ve done stand up over the years but I might be hitting him up for a bit more advice.”
Sheargold departs Nova on September 11 after a decade with the network.
It is a big change for Creasey in a hotly contested job. The award-winning show has consistently been at the top of radio surveys with a proven chemistry.
Creasey can’t travel due to stage four lockdown in Melbourne, but he plans to get to Sydney to be in the studio with his colleagues as often as possible.
“I am excited to have that banter each day,” Creasey, 30, said.
“Kate and I are very competitive, there is a lot she can learn from me, and I have known Tim for ages.”
