Nick Kyrgios’ big sister says the star tennis player and renowned bad boy won’t change his ways — and shouldn’t have to.
Halimh Kyrgios — who has risen to prominence herself this year by making the final 20 cut on the top-rating The Voice, is full of admiration for her younger brother’s feats both on and off the court.
“He likes to entertain and do trick shots and as long as he enjoys himself that’s what we focus on as a family,’’ Halimah Kyrgios, 31, said.
“Life is too short. Sometimes he suffers a lot of anxiety from the pressure. It’s a really tough industry and you’re basically hotel hopping for a whole year. You have to be tough on the tennis tour.
“I always ask his agent — how was his attitude today, was he positive, how was he playing? I think when it’s your brother, even a sibling, it feels like it’s you as well.”
Kyrgios, who is now based in Hong Kong and works in dance and musical theatre, said brother Nick did his best to keep up with her career.
He briefly appeared via zoom from their home in Canberra during her blind audition on The Voice.
“I think he wanted to be on more of the show but there was no place for him to be,’’ she laughed.
“He is such a busy guy and he really does his best to be present and see what I’m doing.”
Kyrgios said she was surprised by how far she had progressed despite her obvious talent. She is performing this week for a spot in the semi-finals.
“That was really a shock to me to get through, the two other singers were just amazing in their own right so it came down to what (coach Rita Ora) was looking for on the day,’’ Kyrgios said.
“I started my singing lessons at 13 or 14 but I never was belting those massive big notes. My singing teachers used to always say ‘don’t belt’ and I used to question why they’d tell me that.
“I went overseas to start my university degree and the teacher said let it rip. So if it wasn’t for her I don’t know what I’d be doing these days.
“I really love to dance in my spare time, it’s something I really enjoy. Ballet, jazz, hip hop, contemporary; that’s also why I’m into musical theatre.”
Kyrgios said British pop star Ora was genuinely invested.
“She’s so cool and fun and always looks a 10/10,’’ she said.
“The sessions are always fun, not too serious. She can see I’m very calculated and it’s very technical how I sing, and she’s trying to strip me back where it’s just really raw.”
