The mulleted, gun-toting polygamist and country western singer has become a household name after being the focus of Netflix’s Tiger King true crime docu-series that has roared to the top on US television.
It debuted on March 20 and according to Rotten Tomatoes ranks as the most popular current TV show.
The insight into big cat owners is fascinating in itself, but it also turns dark.
Exotic, a private zoo owner in Oklahoma with hundreds of exotic animals, ends up in jail for hiring a hitman to take out rival zoo operator, Carole Baskin.
Real name, Joseph Maldonado-Passage, he is currently serving a 22-year prison sentence for two counts of murder for hire and federal charges of animal abuse.
Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness has been described as an ugly portrait of humanity, but singer Cardi B has come out pledging to start a GoFund Me campaign to free Exotic.
The popularity of the series, both here and abroad, has now ignited talk of a feature film adaptation of the documentary.
A miniseries is also in the works with Australia’s Margot Robbie reportedly in the mix to play Exotic. Kate McKinnon has already signed on to play Baskin.
