Miley Cyrus has cancelled her show at the Australian Grand Prix due to fears about coronavirus.

Cyrus said on Twitter: “Due to the recommendations of (US) local, state, federal and international government authorities, including the Center for Disease Control, to reduce potential health risks in response to the current global health crisis, we are no longer travelling to Australia for the show.

“I am so disappointed to not be there, but I have to do what is right to protect the health and safety of my band and crew.

“I will still be making a donation to help the victims of the Australian bush fire. I’m sorry to miss everyone in Australia, but I will be back soon.”

Cyrus was scheduled to play a bushfire relief concert in Melbourne on Friday at Lakeside Stadium with Lil Nas X, The Veronicas and Seb Fontaine.

In a statement promoters said “We are very sad that Miley Cyrus has announced that she will not be travelling to Melbourne and that as a result the World Tour Bushfire Relief concert at Lakeside Stadium on Friday 13th March can no longer go ahead. All fans will receive a full refund and will be contacted by Ticketek shortly.

“World Tour’s Saturday night show with Robbie Williams will still be going ahead, and we look forward to bringing Melbourne a fantastic night of entertainment. Robbie is already on his way to Australia.”

Cyrus’ show had been on discount site LastTix for the past week, with tickets selling for around $80.

Williams, who starts his Vegas residency shortly after his one-off Australian show, is expected to make a series of promotional appearances in Melbourne later this week.

It is unclear whether he is travelling from his home in the UK or LA, his wife Ayda has been posting videos with the singer from LA on her Instagram page over the last week.

Williams’ show is also on LastTix, another victim of slower than expected sales hitting the entire local entertainment industry in the wake of coronavirus fears.

Cyrus is the first major Australian outdoor show to be axed citing coronavirus.

Comedian Russell Brand cancelled a show in Perth on Monday night after a punter who had been to the venue previously had been diagnosed with the virus.

In America, rock band Pearl Jam have just postponed their entire North American tour, due to start next week.

“We’ve worked hard with all our management and business associates to find other solutions or options but the levels of risk to our audience and their communities is simply too high for our comfort level,” the band said in a statement. “Add to that we also have a unique group of passionate fans who travel far and wide. We’ve always been humbled by this and respect their energies and devotion. However in this case, travel is something to avoid.”

“It certainly hasn’t helped that there’s been no clear messages from our government regarding people’s safety and our ability to go to work. Having no examples of our national health department’s ability to get ahead of this, we have no reason to believe that it will be under control in the coming weeks ahead.”

Rumours are swirling that US music festival Coachella may be postponed to later this year, after a tennis event in the area was cancelled.

Overnight Madonna has had her final two shows in Paris cancelled due to the French Government banning large gatherings in an attempt to stem the coronavirus.

All events with capacities over 1000 have been banned.

Rick Astley and a-ha cancelled Japanese shows due to take place this week, while acts including BTS, Green Day Mariah Carey, Foals, Slipknot, The National and Stormzy have axed or postponed shows citing coronavirus fears.

Cyrus was due to arrive in Australia as early as tomorrow with boyfriend Cody Simpson, despite reports she was already in the country.

She has a personal connection to bushfire disasters after the home she shared with ex-husband Liam Hemsworth near LA was burned to the ground.

“I wrote Malibu about finally having this home of my own near the ocean, this place that felt like my sanctuary of peace, and that was destroyed by fires. My second home that also brought that kind of peace to me was also being affected by fire.”

Cyrus and Hemsworth split last year. She is now dating Australian singer Cody Simpson.

“It keeps me coming back to Australia more and more, I can’t get away. I don’t want to, either,” she said of her relationship with Simpson.

“Our families both listened to country music growing up, that was one of the things we connected on, we’ve been friends for the last eight years, my little sister is great friends with his sister, my mum is great friends with his mum, a lot of that came from both our dads loving country.

“I think it’s just that lifestyle. I never knew until going to Australia the first time that Melbourne and where I grew up in Nashville had so many similarities.”
