MICHELLE Payne was reunited with the Melbourne Cup on Monday as the history making jockey-turned-trainer revealed the joy of seeing her movie, Ride Like a Girl, finally come to life.

Payne, who was the first female jockey to win the Cup on Prince of Penzance in 2015, was part of the 2018 Lexus Melbourne Cup launch which unveiled the trophy’s tour across Australia, New Zealand, Europe and South Korea.

“Having won it or not, I still would be excited for it,’’ Payne said. “I’m really focusing on my training at the moment and keeping an eye on the movie.

“I’ve been on set a couple of times and it was such an amazing experience.

“The best part was seeing (my brother) Stevie in action which was really special.

“(Director) Rachel Griffiths said he’s an absolute star, she’s already had inquiries for other movies for him. He would never have imagined that in his wildest dreams.

“What I’ve seen is really funny and lighthearted.

“I read (the script) twice and couldn’t get enough of it.”

Payne and the Melbourne Cup trophy, valued at $250,000, were joined on Monday by Lexus ambassador Kate Waterhouse and Flemington ambassador Georgia Connolly, plus Hugh Bowman, the jockey of champion Winx.

Payne, Bowman and his wife, Christine, are ambassadors for the 37-stop cup tour starting on July 10 in London.

This year marks 25 years since Irish stayer Vintage Crop became the first internationally trained horse to win the race that stops a nation. To celebrate the milestone, the cup will attend the Irish Oaks Weekend at The Curragh.

VRC chairman Amanda Elliott said it was a special opportunity to continue building the Melbourne Cup’s international profile.

“It is just extraordinary to go on one of those legs and watch people drive thousands of kilometres just to come and see the Lexus Melbourne Cup,” Mrs Elliott said. “There’s a sense of ownership about the Melbourne Cup I think that all of us can identify with, irrespective of whether you’re at Flemington or not.”
