The magical week for Melbourne Cup winning jockey Robbie Dolan just got even more special after taking to the stage at Crown for a duet performance with fellow Irishman Ronan Keating.
Keating and Dolan, a former contestant on The Voice, sang three songs on stage at the Crown Oaks Club Lunch before 1250 guests on Wednesday.
Dolan, clutching his winners’ trophy which he said he’d drunk Guinness and Vodka out of while celebrating on Tuesday night, performed Van Morrison’s Brown Eyed Girl, Boyzone’s When You Say Nothing At All and Ronan Keating’s Life is a Rollercoaster.
“I haven’t sang with Ronan before and we did a sound check, it was great,” Dolan said.
“It’s up there, it’s funny I thought I’d reached a level but it just keeps going up.”
Dolan said he still loves music but will switch back to riding duties with a meet in Ipswich on Thursday.
“I don’t know if the Melbourne Cup has ever been up there,” Dolan said.
Keating ran down to hug Dolan in the mounting yard after his triumph on outsider Knight’s Choice.
“This is a dangerous room holy moly,” Keating said.
“It was a great week to be at the Cup and to be in Australia, thank you for the love you’ve given me.
“Congratulations to Robbie, it’s an incredible effort and he deserves it. I was thinking, it’s all about the voice and wow man, how life could have been different if he was a singer. It’s special to be up here together.”
Dolan had joked there was a fella that wanted to give him singing lessons.
He said he’d had five hours sleep and “sweet dreams”.
“It hasn’t really sunk in actually, I’ve been herded around like cattle, doing interviews with everyone and channels I’ve never heard of but I’ve won the Melbourne Cup and that’s all that matters,” Dolan said.
“We went to Crown last night and I couldn’t tell you where I was. I must have taken 400 photos and I was happy to do them. Kerrin McEvoy said to me after the race, you can do all the media but they’re the ones you should really appreciate because that’s not going to happen every day of the week.”
Asked if he busted out into song, he said: “F… yeah I did.”
British model and actor Elizabeth Hurley also stepped out at the lunch with son Damian after attending the Melbourne Cup.
“Melbourne has always been a very special place for me, to attend is very exciting,” she said.
“So far it’s beyond expectation. We love being in Australia and we get a few days now to enjoy it.”
The Hurleys will be back on course on Thursday to attend Crown Oaks Day.
