New MasterChef judge Andy Allen says he is part of a dream trio that was a “masterstroke” idea.
Allen, Melissa Leong and Jock Zonfrillo have taken over as judges from veterans George Calombaris, Matt Preston and Gary Mehigan.
He said a meeting with Preston before Christmas also helped steel him for the job ahead.
“Before it was announced we hadn’t really hung out at all,’’ Allen said.
“For production to put us together, it was a masterstroke. Jock and Melissa have been a dream and we catch up outside of filming with our partners, the six of us.
“I caught up with Matt for a few beers before Christmas and he gave me great advice about not forgetting your partner and what lies ahead. We’ve all got their blessing.”
Allen is still filming the new series Back to Win, which will premiere on Network Ten on April 13.
A former winner of the show, Allen said kicking off with guest Gordon Ramsay gave him confidence.
“He set a platform and a bar from day one,’’ Allen said.
“If we doubted ourselves, his support was the biggest vote of confidence ever.
“We’ve still got a fair bit to get through (with filming) and our main goal now is to get it finished.”
Allen has personally had to shut down his five restaurants in the midst of the coronavirus crisis.
“We want to get through this and we’re working through it with our lawyers and accountants, but it’s a really emotional time for the industry,’’ he said.
