There always seemed to be drama, cryptic messages and mind games sprinkled in with romance between Nick Kyrgios and Chiara Passari.
The tennis star started dating the Canberra student in June 2020 and by the Australian Open last year their relationship was intense.
Passari had stayed home during the tournament and while Kyrgios continued to win and enthral crowds, his heart was clearly elsewhere.
After his first round victory he posted about late night Facetime calls to Passari: “Chiara Passari my recovery for the night.”
He also wrote: “Miss u Chizzel,’’ alongside a smiley face and love heart after another victory.
And while it all seemed to be young love blossoming, Passari had posted a cryptic message on her Instagram account condemning “cheaters”.
“Cheaters always want you to be loyal while they’re being unfaithful,’’ she posted.
Kyrgios dismissed suggestions they had split, despite him deleting a number of pictures of himself and Passari including a snap from New Year’s Day.
At a press conference he said: “I’m extremely lucky to even be in my position. I’m healthy, I’ve got great friends, great family, an amazing girlfriend back home — I’m blessed.”
As he kept winning, she dashed into Melbourne to be courtside, documenting the flight and reunion to her growing number of followers.
Soon after on Valentine’s Day she clarified her feelings: “I have learnt a lot and am also learning a lot about myself since meeting you. There will always be struggles but as long as that magic and those unforgettable experiences are there it’s all worth it. Happy belated Valentine’s. I love you.”
In a declaration deleted soon after posting, Kyrgios also shared his love on Valentine’s Day, writing: “Happy valentines Chizza, I’m so lucky to have you in my life, it’s been a roller coaster of an 8 months, and I want you to know that I’m incredibly thankful and blessed to have you by my side putting up with me and supporting me.
“I hope that I can make you feel special and give you everything you deserve. I promise that I will always try and be a better person everyday and care and love for you. To many more valentine days and hopefully next time I can win a match if you come watch me play.”
Passari then travelled overseas with Kyrgios, posting happy snaps in New York, the Bahamas, Boston and Atlanta last year.
It all seemed like smooth sailing until they returned to do quarantine in October in Adelaide.
In their most volatile display yet, Passari publicly shared private messages of what she claimed was abuse from Kyrgios.
She also posted an image on Instagram which she claimed to be of Kyrgios asleep in bed with another woman.
And then she posted a variety of screenshots detailing private conversations with the tennis star, including messages from Kyrgios for her to collect her things from his house.
She sent a pretty strong message on Instagram when asked by a fan what happened back in February at Melbourne nightclub OneSixOne.
Passari answered with pointed reference to that picture which she claimed was Kyrgios in bed with another woman.
“That girl naked in bed with him isn’t me by the way … Hope that clears it up,” she wrote.
South Australian police intervened and the pair stayed in separate rooms.
It seemed their turbulent relationship was officially over, at least it was on social media, and Kyrgios moved on with his current girlfriend Costeen Hatzi after meeting in December.
In February this year Passari accused podcaster Brittany Hockley, who dated Aussie tennis player Jordan Thompson, of breaking the “girl code” and turning a blind eye to how Kyrgios treated her by having him as a guest on her Life Uncut podcast.
Passari commented on Hockley’s post after Kyrgios spoke of his happiness with new-found love: “You were there alongside us most of the travels and only had interests in connecting with the famous people. You know how Nick really was but you still acted blind towards it in hopes to climb to the top. Nick did and said ALL the exact same things in the first months of being with me too. Saying ‘I was the one’, ‘it was love at first sight’ when we first met. He has a playbook – stop being blind to his awful abusive behaviour just for the views”.
Hockley responded: “I am genuinely sorry you were so hurt in your relationship but please don’t bring me into this and make nasty claims about me when it has nothing to do with me. X”
Passari had seemingly moved on, living in Brisbane and devoting more time to her art.
But on TikTok just five days ago she gave a hint that Kyrgios may have been on her mind.
“When you hear him tell everyone that you were the reason why the relationship became toxic,’’ she posted.
