Kylie Brown is taking on her first marathon in an emotional effort for all women who suffer from the debilitating effects of endometriosis.
Brown, the wife of AFL legend Jonathan Brown, has endured 24 years of pain, including nine surgeries, two miscarriages, an ectopic pregnancy and a hysterectomy at 33.
The mum of three said: “This has been gruelling, painful, one of the hardest things I’ll ever do but also so satisfying.
“I have a body that has been through hell but I am one of the lucky ones. I am running for the girls who have been sent away from hospital with a packet of pain killers and told it’s a bad period or it’s in their head, the couples going through IVF because all they want is to start a family and the women who just want to live life without pain.”
Brown only started running last year and will push through the 42km this Saturday.
“To be doing this nine months after my last surgery is very rewarding,’’ Brown said.
“I had planned to do a marathon with my friend Sally (Crinis) and Lucia’s Angels but then I had surgery.
“I’ve come so far, and I’m just going to give it a go. I’m happy if I have to walk a little bit, no one cares about the time, as long as I complete it.”
Last November Jonathan Brown ran his first marathon, the New York Marathon, and Kylie supported him from the sidelines along with his Nova colleagues Sam Pang and Chrissie Swan.
Kylie has started an Endo runner Instagram page and fundraising for Endometriosis Australia.
“(My son) Jack always used to make a joke, and say, ‘do you have an extra belly button’ because of the scars on my stomach,’’ Brown said.
“It has really helped my mindset and really helped my recovery mentally just to set a goal. It’s a huge goal and something I don’t think I’ll ever do again. A great one to tick off though to say I did a marathon — and during a pandemic.”
