It might not be Marvel Stadium or Eddie Vedder, but Jonathan Brown was back on stage with “Pearl Jam”.
Just 24 hours after his surprise cameo with Pearl Jam frontman and close friend Vedder, the Lions legend was called up on stage to belt out Better Man at the Pearl Jam Experience tribute show at the Prince Bandroom in St Kilda on Sunday night.
While Brown said the Marvel Stadium audience dodged a bullet when Vedder declined to offer him the microphone, he put on an impressive performance at the Prince.
Before breaking into song, Brown told the crowd how his close friendship with Vedder had blossomed.
Brown said the pair had bonded over EB, Epidermolysis Bullosa, with all proceeds from Sunday night going to the charity.
Vedder and his wife Jill founded the EB research partnership for the life-threatening rare genetic disorders that affects the skin.
“The reason I’m here, my daughter (Olivia)... the purity of my daughter’s heart,’’ Brown told the crowd.
“Six years ago she was walking this kid out in a wheelchair. And I said ‘what’s wrong, has he got a broken leg, has he got a broken arm?’
“She said no dad, he’s got EB. It’s a horrible skin disease, it’s called the worst disease you’ve ever heard of.
“I thought gee what’s this about. These kids are born without the glue in their skin and they live a lifetime of hurt and pain and sacrifice. The thing that struck me, these kids — their courage. Much tougher than any footballer or anything any of us have ever gone through.
“They are so courageous and you know the best thing about them is they’ve always got a beautiful smile on their face. So I got involved in this wonderful charity EB and obviously Pearl Jam was last night, they’ve got involved with EB.
“Eddie Vedder is a magnificent ambassador, he convinces everyone around the world to really jump on board.”
Brown said it was “magnificent” to be on the Marvel Stadium stage, adding “but I tell you what, I am absolutely excited and ecstatic and over the moon to be here for the real Pearl Jam experience tonight. Here we go boys, let’s go.”
