A new music video starring British supergroup Coldplay, Karate Kid icon Ralph Macchio, and scene-stealing cameos by glorious Melbourne, has surfaced online.
Coldplay, who shot the clip during their four-night takeover at Marvel Stadium last month, released the video for a new song, titled Karate Kid, overnight.
In the clip, Macchio, who shot to fame in the 1984 movie hit Karate Kid, and had a career resurgence in the Netflix spin-off Cobra Kai, plays a struggling musician.
He pounds the pavement, busking at Melbourne hotspots, hoping for recognition or a lucky break.
Melbourne landmarks featured in the Coldplay video include Southbank, Docklands, the State Library, and Birrarung Marr.
Coldplay frontman Chris Martin explained the concept for the music video at the band’s October 31 show.
“We called up Ralph Macchio,” Martin said. “He’s now 63 years old and lives in New York City, except he’s not in New York City today.
“With the permission of the Australian government, he might just be here in Melbourne.”
Martin then explained the plot of the music video.
“Ralph is on the streets of Melbourne trying to become a singer and everybody rejects him.
“He comes to our show and I’ve lost my voice. I see him in the crowd and he says: ‘Can I help you sing?’”
Minutes later, Martin acted out his part for the video – pretending to lose his voice – and Macchio stepped into the spotlight and sang.
Martin told the crowd: “I know many of you are thinking: ‘What the f--- did we pay for?’”
The Karate Kid, released in 1984, tells the story of Daniel LaRusso who learns karate to overcome bullying and become a better person.
Lyrically, the song speaks of finding hope amid hardship and chaos.
It says: “As much as I could, as much as I tried, I just couldn’t seem to find the light, the trees for the wood, the wars left and right.
“Umbrellas with the rain in, I turn on the news, the news has turned off, all the people that the world forgot, the blues get the blues, but the view from the top, is the ocean in a drop.
“Maybe we could share the rain, maybe we could dance again, maybe we could make the sky turn blue, Oh, Daniel knows how to make a dream ... come true.”
