Greta Scacchi’s ageing comments lined up with theme of new film

Hollywood actor Greta Scacchi isn’t fighting the ageing process, but admits it’s a “bummer” that we all have to go through it, as she prepares for the opening night of her new film.

With her 60th birthday approaching, Greta Scacchi concedes actors are judged far more harshly in our youth-obsessed culture.

But this Hollywood actor is not fighting the ageing process, though she admits she doesn’t entirely like it.

“It is a bummer, ageing,” Scacchi told Confidential, in Sydney ahead of Wednesday night’s Sydney Film Festival opening night screening of her new film, Palm Beach.

“We’ve all got to do it. The only comforting thing is knowing that we are actually all going along the conveyor belt at the same pace.”

Scacchi’s comments fit perfectly with the theme of her new film.

Directed by Rachel Ward and opening in cinemas in August, Palm Beach also stars Bryan Brown, Sam Neil, Richard E. Grant, Heather Mitchell and Jacqueline McKenzie and tells the story of a bunch of Baby Boomer friends reunited to celebrate a significant birthday.

“I like the fact that in this story, like in real life, we are all overgrown teenagers really,” she said. “They are more wrinkly but they are those cool, groovy people and that is what you see in real life.”

Scacchi has appeared on the small screen for more than four decades.

“We have that prejudice about people over a certain age but we are now talking about a generation who are the pop culture generation who have come through and they are now in their 60s and 70s,” she explained.

“When we play those characters, we shouldn’t be getting the grey-haired wig
out of the cupboard. We should be how we are and in this film there was a chance to do that.

“When it comes to acting, of course we have the fact that it is more disgraceful for actors to grow old because they are exposed there.

“People see an actor age and they are so shocked. They don’t realise that she has got old at the same pace as they have. Maybe that is the alarming thing, they don’t
want to see that happen because it reminds them of their own mortality.”
