The AFL is hoping to attract more fans to AFLW by showcasing the competition’s unique and inspiring stories in a six-part docu-series called Fearless: The Inside Story of the AFLW.

Four clubs, Collingwood, Adelaide Crows, GWS Giants and Western Bulldogs, feature in the first behind-the-scenes look at women’s football, which will be confirmed on Tuesday after being revealed by the Herald Sun in February.

The Disney+ commissioned series which runs through to Adelaide’s premiership win this year, will air before the next season begins.

Much like last year’s successful AFL series Making Their Mark, which aired on Amazon Prime Video, the AFLW documentary is also produced by the team at Eddie McGuire’s JAM TV.

“In my first year as president (of the Western Bulldogs) I started spending time in the rooms with the girls and I had the opportunity to see first hand that this truly was a story that needed to be told,’’ said Kylie Watson-Wheeler, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of The Walt Disney Company in Australia and New Zealand.

“The passion of these young women for the game, the sacrifices they’re making to carve out this career. It also really struck me that they each had a really unique way of going about their football journey. I was so inspired and motivated by it and I knew that this would be a compelling story and it certainly is.”

The AFL is confident the series, to be announced by Disney+ along with eight other locally commissioned projects, will make an impact. The camera and post-production crew is led predominantly by females.

“It’s brilliant, you laugh, you cry, people will love it,’’ said Kylie Rogers, AFL Executive General Manager of Customer and Commercial.

“We’ve all seen the success that’s what come out of what I call ‘sportstainment’ content. Drive to Survive, Making Your Mark and The Last Dance. The power of that kind of content drives more interest in the sport, and frankly attracts new fans and that’s why we’re excited to be doing this with AFLW.

“Disney share the same belief as us that it’s the right of every woman and girl to coach or umpire or administer our game. It’s a great strategic partnership.”
