Former Collingwood president Eddie McGuire is used to being among big crowds but he’s just experienced something special in the US.
McGuire is in Ohio and watched his son Joe’s team play in front of a crowd of 104,000 people.
Joe is a college football punter signed in July by the Ohio State Buckeyes after quietly training for several years.
Ohio beat Minnesota 37-3 and next week is the big time match up against arch rivals Michigan, which is set to attract an even bigger crowd.
McGuire says it’s like Collingwood versus Carlton: “they hate the Blues”.
There were other Aussies in Ohio; Channel 7’s chief football reporter Mitch Cleary plus ABC Radio’s Ben Cameron and Corbin Middlemas.
They all met with McGuire at the game and are over there to catch up with Ohio’s Australian born No.1 punter Jesse Mirco.
McGuire said Joe, 22, had left a commerce course at Melbourne University to pursue his NFL ambitions.
His younger brother, Xander, 20, is a sports reporter for Nine News and is still at university full-time doing a politics, philosophy and media course.
He is on the path of following in his father’s news-breaking footsteps.
