AFL legend Robert DiPierdomenico has named his top five footballers — and one player he had to give the hard word about training.
Hawks champion DiPierdomenico, popularly known as Dipper, made the revelations while discussing his career with former AFL star Travis Varcoe in a deleted scene from Channel 10’s I’m A Celebrity … Get me Out Of Here.
Dipper reflected on Hawthorn’s eight grand finals. and five wins, during his time at the club.
“In 1985, we were embarrassed by Essendon,” Dipper told Varcoe. “Essendon-Hawthorn; we had this hatred … but we loved playing against each other. If you played two games a year, it was those two games.”
Dipper said the Hawks pre-season training started in December.
“Our training was more like doing 25ks, 30ks (runs). Darren Jarman, one of the great players
came to hawthorn in 1991. We always had a player we had to look after; Darren was my player.
“I said, ‘Daz, we’re going for a 30k run. He said, ‘What? I don’t run, mate.’”
“I said, Listen you’re not playing SNAFL anymore, you’re playing with the big boys.”
Dipper added: “He was slow and couldn’t do a push up.”
Asked by Varcoe for a list of the top five footballers he played with, Dipper replied: “Leigh Matthews, Jason Dunstall, Dermott Brereton, John Platten and Gary Ayres.”
He added: “There’s some wonderful players.”
