FIRST it was bone broth instead of baby formula. Then it was sunscreen is silly. Now celebrity chef Pete Evans is claiming dairy foods remove calcium from bones.

Flying in the face of conventional medical guidance to consume dairy to protect against osteoporosis, the paleo diet devotee has warned one sufferer to stop consuming it.

“I’ve been diagnosed with osteoporosis. My doctor insists that medication is the only way, can paleo help?” a woman asked on a Q & A session on Evans’ Facebook site this week.

“Most doctors do not know this information,” Evans boasted on Facebook.

“I haven’t given my kids dairy for over five years and they are thriving.”

Endocrinologist and medical director of Osteoporosis Australia Professor Peter Ebeling blasted Evans for the claims which, he said, were wrong.

“He shouldn’t be saying these things. It’s really bad and just not true,” he said.

“The keystone to preventing osteoporosis is adequate calcium intake and this is achieved by three (daily) serves of calcium-rich foods like dairy. Dairy is the most easily available source and has the highest calcium content in it.

“(Evans) has a high media profile and he does have a responsibility but you can’t assume what he says is scientifically correct.

“Osteoporosis Australia is happy to work with him and make him an ambassador to give the correct message.”

In the same Q & A session, Evans told a woman who was trying to persuade her husband to stop taking cholesterol tablets that she should “look into the side effects and the science showing how dangerous these meds are”.

He said cholesterol medication such as statins could cause Alzheimer’s disease before directing the woman to a link that charges $149 for Evans’ 10-week Paleo Way program.

Cardiologist and Heart Foundation chief medical adviser Professor Garry Jennings said Evans did not have the medical training to give out advice on drugs that had been responsible for a 30 per cent drop in the risk of heart attack and death.

“I don’t think he has the background training to be making these kinds of judgments and they are not without consequence,” Prof. Jennings said.

Negative publicity about cholesterol-lowering drugs in the past had led to people going off their medication and studies had shown a corresponding rise in heart attacks, he said.

“People are put at risk of death (with this advice). It’s ill considered.”

Last month, Evans was blasted after describing using normal sunscreen as “silly” because it was full of “poisonous chemicals”.

Evans was contacted for comment but did not respond.
