Billy Brownless suffers personal loss while on I’m A Celebrity

Former Geelong champion Billy Brownless was a star on I’m A Celeb, and he’s opened up about the night he was booted from the jungle and learned of the loss of his beloved father.

Billy Brownless has paid tribute to his late father who he lost while in South Africa on I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!.

The footy favourite said the night he was voted out of the jungle was eerily the same time his beloved dad, Anthony “Tony” Brownless, passed away, aged 82.

“It only happened the night I got voted off, virtually the same time,’’ Brownless said.

“It was sad. He was quiet and he had dementia and had been in the home for a while.

“It’s still sad when you get told halfway around the world. You feel hopeless and helpless.”

Brownless said his eldest daughter Lucy told him the news and Channel 10 gave him the option to cancel scheduled post eviction interviews.

“I got voted off and then the first phone call, I got onto Lucy and she was all sad,’’ he said.

“Then they said Billy we’ve got 22 interviews you have to do but to their credit they said you don’t have to do it.

“I said give me an hour, I went back to my room and got the head right.”

When Brownless returned, he and his four children headed to Jerilderie for a memorial service, which was the day after he marked his 53rd birthday.

He has been back for a month and has returned to his Triple M Rush Hour show.

“I lost 11kgs but the problem is I’ve put back 6 or 7,’’ Brownless said.

“I’ve been back for a month and it’s easy to put on weight.

“I got voted out reasonably early, 17 days and 17 nights. I got back into the food and beer alright.

“It’s something I would have never have done, but happy to do it and I was well looked after by Channel 10. I just think I’m too old for reality TV now so no Bachelor for me.”

Brownless said he was happy seeing his daughters, Lucy and Ruby, in loving relationships with good men, Paddy McCartin and Josh Wallis, respectively.

“They’re in love and they’re both good boys. That’s all you want as a dad, good son-in-laws,’’ he said.

Brownless reunited with his Rush Hour co-host James Brayshaw at the Southern Cross Austereo launch last night.

Brayshaw said deep down he was proud of Brownless.

“I didn’t watch a second of (I’m a Celeb), I was too busy working on the cricket,’’ he said.

“I noticed Australia voted him out very quickly.

“All I want is for Bill at some stage to do some of the heavy lifting. I’m about to have two shoulder reconstructions from carrying him.”
