Billy Brownless says it was all a bit of fun after having the last laugh over Hawks president Jeff Kennett on Monday.

The footy larrikin was captured at the MCG chuckling in the background when the camera panned to Kennett during the tense late stages of the match.

The Cats got home by a whisker against Hawthorn in another epic between the two sides.

In a post of the screenshot on Instagram, Brownless wrote: “Sucked in Jeffrey. Never in doubt. We take the 4 points!!!!”

Brownless was with his brother Blair and they were holding beers while having fun inside the president’s function as a downtrodden Kennett looked on.

The picture went viral on Monday night after the Cats’ five-point win.

“It was all a bit of fun,’’ Brownless said.

“We spoke to him during the day, and we didn’t realise the first time we were on the TV … Jeff was getting a photo with a fan and all of a sudden the phone was going off.

“They’re always close games.”

At one point, Blair held up both hands to Kennett, which Brownless said was to signal 10 seconds to go.

The two teams have built a strong rivalry over the past few decades, with Kennett at one time outspoken about the Hawks having a mental edge over Geelong.

Since the 2008 grand final, the tables have turned in the Cats’ favour.

Geelong has now won eight of 10 matches against Hawthorn on Easter Monday.

Popular media performer Brownless played 198 games for the Cats and kicked 441 goals during the 80s and 90s.

Brownless wasn’t the only Cat having the last laugh, with ex-Hawk Isaac Smith getting his first win over his former club in his new colours.

He was booed by Hawks fans through the match.
