Aussie singer G Flip has big ambitions after being announced as the 2023 AFLW Premiership Cup Ambassador.
“I’m very, very honoured and I really passionately love AFLW,’’ G Flip said.
“A couple of years ago I had a few wines at the best and fairest awards and I said to (AFL General Manager Women’s Football) Nicole (Livingstone) when you want to retire I want to be the future CEO. It’s really a dream.”
Melbourne born singer/songwriter and drummer G Flip attended the AFLW season launch on Monday night at The Forum with wife, Selling Sunset star Chrishell Stause.
The couple live in LA but regularly return to Melbourne. G Flip, an avid Collingwood fan, performed during halftime at last year’s grand final, has attended many AFLW Awards and is friends with many players.
“I have been a footy fan since birth and an AFLW fan since the league began, I can’t wait to watch the season, it’s getting bigger and bigger,’’ G Flip said.
“I’m touring in the US in September and October but I’ll be at any games I can. (The Pies) are going to win the premiership.”
AFL Commission Chairman Richard Goyder said he’s backing the AFLW competition to galvanise the country like The Matildas.
“ … talk about Matildas and their incredible efforts over the last few weeks and what that’s done for the country. But in my view put 540 exceptional athletes together with the best game in the world and we can do anything with AFL Womens,’’ he said.
“We’re going to build it through our clubs, our players, our community, our facilities, our coaches and our talent pathways.”
Incoming AFL CEO Andrew Dillon was also bullish about the impact of AFLW.
“There is a global movement happening, it was on show over the last month when our country was captivated by the Matilda’s journey,’’ he said.
“Women in sport is not an overnight success.
“Women have long since inspired our nation and we have witnessed the stars of our own AFLW competition motivating the next generation of women and girls to play our game.”
Also at the launch, hosted by media personality Flex Mami, were club presidents Luke Sayers, Sonja Hood, Kate Roffey, chief executives Brian Cook, Craig Kelly and Brendon Gale, plus Andrew Dillon and Gillon McLachlan with daughter Edie.
