COMEDY bosses are not joking, saying the Melbourne International Comedy Festival is more popular than sport.
“The Comedy Festival had an attendance of 760,000 people last year which is more than all the AFL finals combined,” state Creative Minister Martin Foley announced at the official launch of the 32nd Melbourne International Comedy Festival at The Forum.

COMEDY ACTS THAT ARE DOUBLE TROUBLE
“This year there are 620 shows, 7500 performers in more than 100 venues.”
Foley was joined by Acting Lord Mayor Aaron Wood who noted “it’s not the 30-second festival, it’s a 26-day marathon”, before making a reference to the recent turmoil within the Lord Mayor’s Office.
Hosts Lano and Woodley previewed their new show, Fly, based on the Wright brothers, with a song.
Cal Wilson and Deadly Funny winner Stephanie Tisdell also performed.
The Festival runs today until April 22 with stars Dave Hughes, Celia Pacquola, Wil Anderson, Tom Gleeson and Aunty Donna expected to pull huge crowds.
