The Great Gadsby

Hot on the heels of her global smash hit stand-up show, Nanette, Australian comedian Hannah Gadsby has announced a new tour - starting at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

The Tasmanian-born comedian shot to international stardom with Nanette, which also became a critically acclaimed Netflix special after airing in June last year.

In the groundbreaking show, which she played around Australia and the UK for 18 months, she said she was quitting stand-up comedy.

But Gadsby has now announced she will tour with a new show, Douglas - inspired by her dog.

Douglas will premiere at the Arts Centre from March 27 to April 7, during the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, before Gadsby heads to San Francisco for her first US tour.

Additional dates in Australia, Europe, Canada and New Zealand will be announced later.

“While Nanette was a random barista, Douglas is a very specific dog, and the only thing they have in common is they’ve inspired Hannah to put pen to paper and turn out a show you couldn’t possibly expect,” said a statement in the announcement for Douglas.

“Hannah found her voice with Nanette and with Douglas she plans to use it.”

Gadsby’s “overnight success” was more than 10 years in the making, with sell-out shows in festivals across Australia and the UK since 2009.

She played a character called Hannah on the TV series Please Like Me and has hosted three art documentaries, inspired by comedy art lectures she created to accompany collections at major galleries.

Gadsby also has a book in the works, with translation rights have been sold in multiple territories.

Tickets to her Melbourne performances of Douglas go on sale at 10am AEDT on Wednesday, February 13. For information, go to comedyfestival.com.au or hannahgadsby.com.au
