Comics give the show away Vol.2

HANNAH Gadsby’s farewell comedy show is a bittersweet experience.

Sweet because this is a well-crafted and thoughtful show. Bitter because we won’t see her again; in this format anyway.

The show title’s inspiration — a country barista called Nanette — affords only passing material, which is a blessing because there is so much more to savour.

Gadsby unfolds a beautifully paced show that offers light and shade.

Here is a strong, confident woman at her peak. But Gadsby hasn’t always been like that and her personal struggle provides the framework for this show.

Issues of identity and gender politics are tackled with skill and nuance. There’s also a diversion into the connection between mental health and the creation of great art.

If it sounds intriguing, it is.

At times, tension fills the room — not awkward but compelling nonetheless as the unease aims to offer a snapshot of the anguish she experienced in her life, especially during her formative years.

This is a show that delivers much intellectual heft, that evolves gags into stories with real meaning.

Sure, at times it did sometimes feel a bit like a rally — but it was a rage against the awfulness of the world.

Gadsby struck at the emotional core of her audience — even this straight white male from the Herald Sun. (Same can’t be said for a chap nearby who was so clearly disengaged he spent some time checking his phone.)

If this really is Gadsby’s comedic farewell — the nation’s comedy scene will be poorer for her leaving. Go see her while you can.
