Forget the duelling duchesses — Meghan Markle’s sensible and sustainable wardrobe choices on this tour are a clear indication she has a lot in common with her style sista, Kate.
Picking up on the populist ‘every woman’ ways of the Duchess of Cambridge, the much-maligned Duchess of Sussex has tweaked her royal tour style to show she’s learning how to play her part — and dress for the job.
Recycling a maxi dress by Australian designer Martin Grant she first wore on the shores of Bondi Beach, as well as a sky blue Veronica Beard Cary shirt dress she donned in Fiji, Meghan demonstrated to her critics she can be just as frugal as her alleged Palace foe when she needs to be.
And she needed to be on this tour especially, where rolling out an extravagant collection of luxury brand names would not have read well while touring poverty-stricken communities; or rubbing shoulders with women desperate for an education, let alone a wardrobe of designer labels.

Instead, Meghan was the picture of a royal with a social and style conscience, paying respect to one of the host nations’ on the very first day of the tour — wearing a Mayamiko dress, by a sustainable and ethical label from Malawi.
She completed the look with a pair of Kate’s favourite footwear — espadrilles — which she economically wore again on the African trip.
There were more high street staples from J Crew and its sister brand, Madewell, owned by the same US parent company which offers affordable basics with a fashion twist.
She rewore an Everlane jumpsuit seen first behind the scenes of her Vogue issue; while the GAS earrings were spotted on her last Royal tour to Morocco.
Perhaps the most obvious style clue to her new ‘low key’ look was the absence of her controversial diamond engagement ring which she did not wear for most of this royal visit.
But the provocateur in the former Suits star was also on show, if you knew where to look: sporting an aptly named ‘Not Guilty’ pair of Mother jeans.
Take that, trash mags.
