Marvel Studios spends millions to film Avengers: Doomsday beside Windsor Castle

Hollywood bosses are paying a King’s ransom to film the latest Marvel superhero movie on royal grounds, with King Charles expected to keep an eye on the blockbuster shoot.

Hollywood is spending big to bring its next Marvel blockbuster to royal grounds — with filming for Avengers: Doomsday underway in Windsor Great Park, just a stone’s throw from Windsor Castle.

Marvel Studios, owned by Disney, is reportedly shelling out millions of pounds to transform parts of the Berkshire Park into film sets, with proceeds from the location fees going towards the maintenance of the estate.

The park is owned by Crown Estates and King Charles — who serves as Ranger of Windsor Great Park — receives 25 per cent of its annual profits.

While the exact fee remains undisclosed, a source told The Sun: “Several million pounds is chicken feed to Marvel when their movies make billions. But the money will go to the upkeep of Windsor Great Park so the King of course has a keen interest.

“Some of the profits of Crown Estates make their way to the royal family so it’s a win-win for everyone. The royal family may even be persuaded to pop by and have a look at Thor in action.”

The filming will involve a cast of up to 300 crew and performers, according to planning documents.

While details are tightly guarded, two set locations have been disclosed: Luke Cage’s House and Annie Reynolds’ House.

Cage, also known as Power Man, is a superhero with immense strength and unbreakable skin. Reynolds is believed to be a new character — the mother of Sentry.

Exclusive images reveal a fully constructed 1960s-style American home for the Cage storyline. On screen, fans can expect appearances from Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, and Sir Ian McKellen reprising his role as Magneto.

King Charles has reportedly been informed of the plans, though he is expected to be at Balmoral during the shoot.

Still, the royal family has a longstanding interest in film. Charles is a patron of the British Film Institute and attended the premiere of Gladiator II last year.

Prince William has served as President of BAFTA since 2010.

In 2023, William and Catherine took Prince George and Princess Charlotte to visit the set of The Rings of Power in nearby Ascot. The Princess of Wales has also shared that their youngest, Prince Louis, is a big fan of Spider-Man.

Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame, part of the same franchise, remains the second highest-grossing movie of all time with global earnings topping £2 billion ($A4.1bn).
