King Charles III and his wife Queen Consort Camilla narrowly avoided being hit with eggs during a visit to northern England.
The 73-year-old monarch and Camilla, 75, barely flinched as four eggs flew past their heads and crashed into the pavement nearby during a walkabout in York.
A man was heard shouting “this country was built on the blood of slaves” and “not my king” before he was detained by several police officers as the incident occurred, footage showed.
The protester also booed the royal couple before he appeared to lob the eggs, and photos showed him poking his tongue out as he was carried away.
King Charles carried on meeting wellwishers after the eggs were thrown.
According to lip reader Jeremy Freeman, he told a female in military uniform “it’s fine, let’s carry on”, The Mirror reports.
The monarch then turned to a protection officer and asked: “Everything alright?”
Mr Freeman believes the officer responded: “He’s been taken care of.”
Police confirmed the arrest of a 23-year-old man, identified by British media as former Green Party candidate and Extinction Rebellion activist Patrick Thelwell.
Mr Thelwell has been arrested several times, including in 2019 in a so-called peace tent in Trafalgar Square, according to The Sun.
He was convicted for obstructing a highway after joining protests blocking newspaper printing presses last year.
Footage also showed him last year being removed from a community centre where he was squatting.
And he designs ecological gardens with his firm Patch Gardening. He is also preparing to study a PhD at the University of York.
Other people in the crowds that had gathered at the historic Micklegate Bar location for the visit started chanting “God Save the King” and “shame on you” at the protester.
Charles and Camilla continued with a traditional ceremony to officially welcome the sovereign to the city of York by the lord mayor as police were pictured taking the suspected perpetrator into custody.
UK media named him as a former Green Party candidate and activist with the Extinction Rebellion environmental protest group.
The royals were in the historic city to attend the unveiling of a statue of Charles’s mother Queen Elizabeth II, the first to be installed since her death on September 8.
KATE CHARMS YOUNG FANS IN LONDON
Kate Middleton has again proven a massive hit with royal fans, with one young boy being particularly smitten.
The Princess of Wales visited a childcare centre in London on Wednesday local time and struck a chord with one young fan, three-year-old, Akeem.
As the boy admired Middleton’s Remembrance poppy, the Princess said, “Would you like it?”, promptly unpinning it and handing it over to the delight of the boy’s mum and onlookers.
Middleton had travelled to the Colham Manor Children’s Centre in London to support the Maternal Mental Health Alliance (MMHA), a British charity in which she serves as patron.
The Princess of Wales joined a mother-and-baby group and spoke with mothers who benefited from the care given at the centre.
Itâs not everyday you get a poppy from a Princess ð Akeem whoâs 3 was very chatty when Kate unexpectedly stopped to say hello at a maternity mental health visit so she gave him her remembrance poppy. “A wonderful first visit with the Maternal Mental Health Alliance this morning, seeing its work and the benefit a holistic approach brings to so many mothers and families,” the official Twitter account of the Prince and Princess of Wales wrote alongside photos of Middleton at the centre.
“Spending some time with new mothers, understanding more about their experiences of mental health and how integrated services are making a real difference in the community,” the account tweeted.
The Princess was announced as patron of the MMHA in May.
“We all know that pregnancy, childbirth and the first months and years of a child’s life can be hugely demanding. Parents often feel lonely and overwhelmed by these early years,” Middleton said in a video message on the official Prince and Princess of Wales Twitter account.
“Around 20 per cent of women in the U.K. are reported to experience peri-natal mental illness. Sadly, we also know that many more are suffering in silence.”
“No one is immune to experiencing anxiety and depression during this time,” she continued. “It is crucial, therefore, that all those who might be struggling are given the right support at the right time, so that they’re able to share these feelings without fear of judgment and can access the information, care and support they need to recover.”
Last week, Middleton and husband Prince William made their first public appearance together in weeks.
The Prince and Princess of Wales travelled to Scarborough to meet with various charitable organisations dedicated to improving teenagers’ mental health.
