Kyle Sandilands has hit back at his former friend, Jason Hawkins, after the Melbourne radio host made claims about their time together as flatmates.
The shock jock put Hawkins on blast this morning on The Kyle & Jackie O Show, days after Hawkins claimed at an industry event that Sandilands used to spend his days “getting stoned” and making Hawkins run errands for him.
“He’s a dog for saying [that],” Sandilands told co-host Jackie “O” Henderson.
The two men apparently shared a house in the early 2000s after Hawkins made the move from Triple M in Brisbane to 2DayFM in Sydney, where Sandilands brought him over to the network to answer calls and be the program’s stunt guy, “Labrat”.
However, Sandilands – who now fronts the number-one FM breakfast show in the country on KIIS FM – said they were never “flatmates” as Hawkins was just a guest in his house.
“By the way, he said he was a ‘flatmate’. I let him stay in a room. It was my house, I don’t do flatmates, that’s for losers,” Sandilands said on air.
Sandilands did say there was “some truth to Hawkins’ claims”, admitting he smoked marijuana when he was younger.
“Oh, I used to punch cones, yeah,” he told Henderson, before urging listeners not to hang out with Hawkins, who now hosts the KIIS breakfast show in Melbourne, Jase & Lauren in the Morning, alongside Lauren Phillips.
“So don’t do anything with Jase Hawkins from Melbourne,” Sandilands concluded. “He’ll give you straight up to the press.”
It was at the Australian Commercial Radio Awards (ACRAs) on October 14 that Hawkins made the shock claims about Sandilands on stage with Phillips.
“I was 18. [Kyle] did not drink. He never left the house. He just sat there and smoked cones all week and I would just passively get stoned,” Hawkins told the crowd gathered inside ICC in Sydney’s Darling Harbour.
“And then once a week he would say, ‘Let’s go to the video shop’ and I would find the best outfit I owned and wear that and it was the only time we left the house.”
Hawkins claimed Sandilands used to ask him to run errands late at night too, guilt-tripping him into doing so.
“Every night at 8pm he would look at me and go, ‘Remember I took you off the streets and gave you a job?’ Can you ride up the street and get paddle pops from the servo?’” Hawkins said.
But he concluded that his experience with Sandilands was years ago and he believes “that was the old Kyle”.
