Award-winning ABC kids show Bluey is set for the box office with creator Joe Brumm revealing a movie is in the works.

Blue Wiggle Anthony Field is also being wooed to lend his voice to one of the new characters.

The cartoon about a family of Blue Heelers starring former Custard frontman Dave McCormack has broken records for the national broadcaster, with more than 100 million downloads since launch.

Brumm told Bluey fan podcast Gotta Be Done the second series of Bluey would set up key plots for the feature film.

“I’m really pumped,” he said.

“The plan is to bring in two extra characters for that [the feature film] so we’re bringing them in this season a little.”

Bluey will get his debut on the silver screen.

And while stars including Megan Washington, Layne Beachley and Myf Wwarhurst have already voiced characters, Brumm revealed he was angling to get Wiggles creator and performer Anthony Field to voice one of the show’s new characters - the father of Bluey’s school friend Rusty.

“I heard he liked the show,” he said.

“I’ve got so much respect for that guy and what they did, what he did with The Wiggles.

“He doesn’t say much in the role, but hopefully it’s quite a nice moment.”

Bluey was named Most Outstanding Children’s Program at the 2019 Logie awards and has been snapped up by Disney in a global deal which will see it launch in the USA this November.

But Brumm revealed the children’s show was originally set to go in a much racier direction.

“The first script was an R rated Peppa Pig – which was set when the kids were younger and it was very much my wife and my experience of mastitis, and breast abscesses and bleeding nipples,” he said.

“I was literally about to send [the script] and then I watched the first episode of [ABC comedy] The Letdown by Alison Bell. I pretty much threw that script out.”

A Christmas episode is also slated, with Brumm promising it will showcase how Christmas in Australia works without chimneys.
