Melbourne performer Ruva Ngwenya was never considered as a leading lady.
“I was always told I had a strong voice, but it wasn’t meant for lead roles,” Ngwenya said.
“My voice was something to sprinkle in the show, you know, the black girl comes in for a song, then we go back to the main character. But I’ve learnt I am capable and strong enough to carry, and sing, an entire show.”
Years after those showbiz rejections, Ngwenya is playing Tina Turner in a blockbuster musical about the soul legend — and she’s coming home as the star of the show.
TINA The Musical will open at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre in September 2024. Tickets go on sale on September 28.
Ngwenya has garnered rave reviews for her portrayal of Turner, the professional highs and personal lows, and explosive scenes centred on hits including River Deep Mountain High, Proud Mary and Simply The Best.
“It’s a bucket list moment to be a leading lady in my hometown. It will be special, with all my family and friends there, but also nerve racking, because the pressure is on.”
The show’s producer, Paul Dainty, staged many tours with superstar Turner.
He said Ngweyna was cast immediately after her audition.
“Ruva lives and breathes the role and her work ethic is unbelievable. We knew she was Tina as soon as we met her.”
Turner sent a message of support to Ngwenya before the musical opened in Sydney in May.
She told Ngwenya: “I give you licence to find your own soul and own je ne sais quoi in performing the role, and bringing that charisma.”
Turner passed away soon after. She was 83.
