They are successful actors either at home or in Hollywood — or both — so it’s no surprise some of these Aussie stars, like Chris Hemsworth, have been chosen as part of the 2018 BW Magazine Hot List.

CHRIS HEMSWORTH

It could be his playful, down-to-earth attitude towards parenting his three kids. Or it could be his obvious love for his actor wife Elsa Pataky.

Perhaps it’s his fun side that recently led him to pick up a hitchhiker in Brisbane and drop him at Byron Bay — in a helicopter. Or maybe it’s the epic action roles he takes.

Either way, we love Chris Hemsworth and, lets face it, a Hot List of any kind would not be complete without him.

The Thor star has had a packed year professionally, releasing 12 Strong, Avengers: Infinity War and Bad Times At The El Royale. But one of his most memorable 2018 film moments came via Tourism Australia starring as Mick “Crocodile” Dundee’s son in a star-studded mega-ad during the US Super Bowl.

He was the perfect choice to promote Australia to the world — a Hollywood star who has based himself in Byron Bay, not LA.

“There’s the people, the laid-back, warm, welcoming attitude, which is something my wife instantly responded to and that I wanted my kids to embody, I wanted my kids to be influenced by that sort of attitude as well,” Hemsworth tells BW Magazine.

“I’m in a fortunate enough position to be able to, from a distance, do meetings and choose what I want to work on and be apart of.”

RODGER CORSER

You’ve heard of the model gaze Blue Steel, or Sex Panther, perhaps even Le Tigre, thanks to the 2001 fashion film spoof Zoolander. Rodger Corser’s got a new look for the glam squad’s glossary of superstar poses.

Propped against a derelict fire escape in a back alley of Newtown, the leading man stares down the barrel of BW’s lens and describes his signature move with a perfect purr: “Dad of four, doing the school run” before throwing back his head with self-deprecating laughter.

His publicist, agent and a make-up artist, all women, dissolve into giggles, imagining the mums timing their own school run to catch a glimpse of the Gold Logie nominee.

The 45-year-old father of Zipporah, 16 (from his relationship with singer Christine Anu), and Budd, 8, Cilla, 6, and Dustin, 3 with actor/dancer wife Renae Berry, talks proudly about his children during the Hot List shoot.

Parenthood is in happy balance with his booming TV career: He’s filming the final scenes for season three of ABC zombie drama Glitch, before heading into the writers’ room for pre-production of season four of Nine’s Doctor, Doctor. Corser’s inclusion in the plotting of the latter, in which he plays doctor Hugh Knight, is a promotion to producer — reflecting the respect the showrunners have for his creative talents.

With credits including McLeod’s Daughters and The Beautiful Lie, the local industry has served Corser well but he hasn’t ruled out a move to Hollywood: “I’m happy here but you’d never say no if the right project or producer came calling.”

SAM FROST

Summer Bay has long been a sun-soaked nursery for smokin’ hot stars — think Chris Hemsworth, Dannii Minogue and Isla Fisher.

So when former The Bachelorette favourite Sam Frost made the move into acting, Home And Away proved the perfect place to start.

Playing “spirited Aussie girl” Jasmine Delaney — who killed off one of the show’s biggest pin-ups, Pia Miller, in a car crash cliffhanger — Frost found her feet quickly on the Palm Beach set.

But plagued by online trolls, Frost has admitted the transition to high-profile TV star has not come without cost. Her coping strategy?

The tenacious 31-year-old put her nose in her scripts and found the strength within to stand up to her bullies.

“Every challenge you have in life, all those knock-backs, all those difficult times, they make you stronger and help you build courage and bravery. It makes you more resilient and kinder, I think.”

Her co-star and fellow best new talent Logie nominee, Sophie Dillman can attest to that — depending on Frost to hold her hand through her own debut on Seven’s long-running soap. “She is such a phenomenal woman to start with and just works so hard,” Dillman says.

“It’s been really great to learn from her and have a buddy.”

JOEL EDGERTON

It’s no secret Joel Edgerton is one of Australia’s hottest acting exports but this year he proved his mettle as a writer, producer and director with Boy Erased — in which he also stars.

The film has been lauded for its portrayal of LGBTQ struggles, winning the Audience Choice for best studio feature at the San Diego International Film Festival.

Edgerton’s ability to tell such powerful stories won him Australian GQ Man of the Year. The publication said it was the actor’s fearlessness in using his platform that made him the perfect choice this year.

“I have said — and I honestly mean it — that it would be great if this film didn’t have to exist,” Edgerton told GQ.

“As a filmmaker, every time you make something, you hope this lasts forever and people watch it for years to come.”

The Sydney-born actor is also a noted supporter of homegrown talent, casting and starring alongside fellow Aussies Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe in Boy Erased.

This has also been a big year for Edgerton personally. At the GQ Awards night, the 44-year-old debuted his relationship with stylist and Vogue Australia fashion director Christine Centenera.

And it’s no doubt 2019 will follow suit: He is already working on his next venture, The King, for which he has written the screenplay and will star and produce.

YVONNE STRAHOVSKI

This year’s success has been a long time coming for Western Sydney beauty Yvonne Strahovski.

She worked her way through Hollywood’s ranks for years before getting the credit she deserved in 2018 — an Emmy nomination for her performance in US drama The Handmaid’s Tale.

The 36-year-old’s other notable work includes the film I, Frankenstein, drama Chuck and crime series Dexter.

But it was her raw portrayal of the punishing Serena Joy Waterford in The Handmaid’s Tale that propelled her to stardom and also won her a nomination for a Screen Actors Guild Award.

“Maybe our show can be the beginning of inspiring people to learn more about what is happening in the real world? Art imitating life, and life imitating art,” she recently told US media.

Professional recognition mixed with personal blessings: In October, she welcomed her first child with actor husband Tim Loden.

“My heart has melted into a billion pieces a thousand times already. We have been blessed with the greatest joy of our lives, our baby boy,” she wrote on social media.

And 2019 is likely to be just as big, with The Handmaid’s Tale renewed for a third season.
