The cast of Muriel’s Wedding the Musical have dived into rehearsals in Melbourne.
Natalie Abbott, who beat out hundreds of wannabe Muriels around the country to claim the coveted role that catapulted Toni Colette to stardom, says she is excited as opening night edges closer.
“This week has been a big week of firsts,” says Abbott, who is also starring in her first professional stage role.

“We had our first costume and wig fittings for the characters, our first music calls and our first read through of the script,” she says.
“I think when that curtain goes up for the first time in Melbourne I am going to be just as excited as the audience,” she laughed.
Abbott, who comes from the South Coast of NSW, says she spent her summer getting acquainted with her character and her new home.
“I really love Melbourne already; the weather changes quickly, but it’s got a very different buzz, which I like,” she said.
“I’m yet to try out a classic Melbourne brunch but I have tried out the local dumplings,” she said.
Abbott joined fellow cast members Tom Sahrah and Stephen Madsen, who plays Olympic swimmer-hopeful and Muriel’s heart-throb husband Alexander Shkuratov.
