MORE than 400,000 people have attended the MoMA at NGV exhibition making it the second most attended ticketed exhibition in the gallery’s history.
NGV director Tony Ellwood said the exhibition, which covered 130 years of modern and contemporary art, was visited by 404,034 people before closing earlier this week.
“We are thrilled so many visitors enjoyed this international exclusive exhibition, which brought some of the most important works of art and design from MoMA’s impressive collection, from the likes of Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo, Georgia O’Keeffe and Vincent Van Gogh to Australia for the first time.”

Van Gogh and the Seasons in 2017 was Victoria’s most popular ticketed art exhibition in history.
The NGV’s winter blockbuster attracted 462,262 visitors in 76 days, easily eclipsing the gallery’s previous record-holder at the time, Andy Warhol/Ai Weiwei (399,127 in 2015/16).
State Minister for Creative Industries Martin Foley said such exhibitions are among the reasons tourists flock to Victoria.
“Last year, cultural tourism injected $2 billion into our state economy, an 88 per cent increase from 2013, and this trend is set to continue,” Mr Foley said.
Consisting of more than 200 key works, arranged chronologically into eight thematic
sections, the exhibition explored the emergence and development of major movements in art and design from late 19th century urban and industrial transformation, through to the
digital and global present.
