Melbourne’s theatre renaissance continues, with Disney’s Frozen to make its highly anticipated debut at Her Majesty’s Theatre this June.

Created by the producer behind The Lion King, Aladdin and Mary Poppins, Frozen will be one of the first musicals to open in Melbourne since the pandemic began.

It’s welcome news for the Australian principal cast, many of whom hail from Melbourne and are currently performing in Sydney.

“The return of theatre is honestly the best feeling in the world,” said Jemma Rix, who plays lead character, Elsa.

“It’s been overwhelming to be back and have audiences enjoy musical theatre again and to be able to do what we love again.”

The two-and-a-half hour production is geared towards an older audience.

Its includes 12 new songs from Academy Awarding-winning songwriting duo Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, who are responsible for the original Frozen hits including Let It Go.

“The new songs are just as magical as the movie classics. The additional score and arrangement adds so much depth to the story and characters and getting the chance to sing them is such an honour,” said Courtney Monsma, who plays Elsa’s sister, Anna.

“Adults will love the added comedy, innuendo and depth that the extended story allows for … and it still entertains and keeps the attention of the younger audiences.”

A pre-sale for the musical’s Melbourne season begins on March 1, with a waitlist now open online and those who sign up before February 25 to get priority access.
