Frozen the Musical in Sydney: Why adults should flock to the show

Frozen might be a kids film but Frozen the Musical is so much more. One of the stars of the show reveals why children might be fighting off adults to get seats when it opens in Sydney next month.

Disney's Frozen adapted to Broadway play in New York

Frozen the Musical is just for kids.

Utter those words in the presence of Courtney Monsma and you’ll likely get a stare. And an icy one at that.

While the Disney film was an immediate hit with millions of children around the world when it was released in 2013, the musical adaptation is striving to be more.

Monsma, who plays Anna, one half of Arendelle’s royal sisters, is adamant adults won’t be disappointed.

“The stage show is so beautiful and multilayered that everyone can take away something from the show, especially adults,” the 24-year-old said.

“Everything from the comedy, staging and set design, to the new additional songs by the original songwriters, it will truly resonate with an adult audience and is a perfect night out even without the kids.

“I have watched the film many times and listened to the soundtrack even more times than that. The story is always so refreshing and uplifting, and I love the journey it takes you on.”

While attracting a family audience will undoubtedly be a huge part of the show’s audience when it opens at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre on December 1, Frozen the Musical has made some of its ‘school night’ shows extremely attractive to adults.

Midweek tickets can cost up to $40 less than weekend tickets and the ME + 3 deal can and you four seats at a reduced price.

As for Monsma, she just hopes Frozen the Musical gives people an opportunity to escape the reality of what has been a tough 2020 for everyone.

“I am so excited to see how this beautiful production delivers a sense of escapism, offering joy to our audience and I know opening night will be so special as we will get to not only share this story, but share experiences in live theatre again,” she said.

“Working on this production has been challenging in the most incredible way.

“I really resonated with the story straight away as I have an older sister and we have a special bond like Anna and Elsa.

“The story also inspired me with its themes of feminism, personal strength and the notion of never giving up or letting go of yourself for someone else.”

And, of course, there’s the whole princess thing.

“Who doesn’t want to be a Disney princess,” Monsma said.

“I knew that being cast in Frozen would be a milestone in my career and it has fulfilled my childhood dream of being a Disney princess.”

Frozen the Musical opens at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre on December 1 and stars Jemma Rix as Elsa, Courtney Monsma as Anna, Matt Lee as Olaf, Thomas McGuane as Hans and Sean Sinclair as Kristoff.
